Mikuni flatslides?

Are there any actual dyno tests (or, better yet 1/4 mile trap speeds) comparing a pair of Amal Concentrics vs the various Mikuni setups on the same stock Commando engine with no other changes?
Don't know of any but I'd be very interested to see them

That sounds good,if I were you I'd just buy a single manifold and fit a single concentric MK1 easy to tune,I have an almost unused SU phoenix kit on the shelf I may be tempted to part with,my bike ran really well with the CV mikuni fitted but didn't like going above 90mph without emptying the float bowl, this carb was one out of a bank of 4 from an fj1200 Yamaha I had to go up on the main jet and shim the needle , cheers
Is there a particular reason that you don't use or like the SU?

...So I won´t be racing....I really like the idea of a single carb, easier to adjust and less stuff that can mess up.
I converted to a single VM a couple of years ago, mainly because it was a bunch cheaper than a pair of Anals, and the stock carbs were causing idling woes. The fuel enrichment system makes starts very dependable, and it returns a consistent 57-59 mpg (US). It definitely does chop anything above 90 mph, however. I've had a re-think as of late; the Pazon Altair has returned such a beautifully stable idle that I'm thinking of putting the twin Amals back on (I like the way they look).

Just never got around to fitting it ,but from what I have read you can get very good mpg from them
And they don't like starting unless the tank is more than half full , I have around 3 maybe 4 kicks in me because of a knee problem I can't really have a bike that's hard to start

I ran one for years and intend to re-install it when I get it ultrasonically cleaned (it sat for a while with crappy ethanol gas in it). Good performance and amazing gas mileage. I never had a problem starting mine, usually one or two kicks from cold and first time when warm. I had no problems with low fuel starting either though I have heard of people having problems with both of those things.

I planned to do the lawn mower primer conversion that was featured in the owners club magazine to mine but I just don't have time at the moment

Baz, do you know the date of that article by any chance? For the fun of it I'd like to have a go at an S.U. conversion (and i'm a tightwad, so the thoughts of 80+ MPG are appealing) ;)

Cheers,

It's in "road holder" issue 318 from may 2014 written by Mick green,
If you pm me I'll send you a photo of the article, cheers

Also - I have just realised that this SU discussion is probably hijacking the original Mikuni TM thread - maybe start a new SU thread for further discussion?

The ones I´ve looked at (the guy sells two) seems to be a simpler model, no accelerator pump and no push/pull cable. So the price is probably not as good as I thought....around $180 or £135 for one carb.
fwiw, ebay shows
Mikuni TM34 Flat Slide 34mm Carburetor Spigot TM34-2 34 mm 42-6100
for ~ 120 bucks US

I have a TM34 flatslide waiting in the wings. I have the VM34 pretty much tuned to perfection and when the bike and I return from Melbourne in early Feb, I shall be having the bike dyno'd alongside a pretty standard 850 with a VM34. Then, I shall be fitting the flatslide to see the difference. I found everything I could on this forum about the TM, printed it all out and ordered a bunch of jets based on the users recommendations. So, I should be somewhere in the ballpark to start. After fine tuning with the TM it will be back on the dyno so that we will have a complete apples versus apples comparison. Jim Comstock says that the TM is good for about 10% in the low range and about the same power in the top end. so it should be an interesting comparison.
HI - an old post but wondering if you managed to fit the TM34 and if there was an improvement? I have a VM34 on the bike I am putting back together, but need to spend a bit on the carb already, and wonder if it's going to be worth spending the few extra $$ and getting a TM instead. Thanks

Not yet. Other issues I have to deal with. I was going tp form the Procrastinators Society of Australia but haven't quite got around to it yet. For some reason.

Imagine if Amal adopted the Mikuni pilot system ...a slight redesign of their carb body and then a far more reliable carb. And happy customers.

Don't forget Amal designed the mikuni VM as far as I know?

The Mikuni pilot system is far from trouble free...

On balance I’m thinking the Premier system is perhaps better...?
