Herringbone oil lines were available about 2 years ago in new manufacture, they were sinfully expensive, then they seemed to go away. I heard that a small shop in England started making the lines, hard to imagine they stopped with such a gold mine; I never heard the full story.

Anyway.

I did some searching and the most recent post is about 2 year old; some leads at Advanced Auto Parts and NAPA. I'm interested in the oil supply and return lines, 3/8" ID, if I could find some herringbone lines at a reasonable per foot price I'd buy; I'm not opposed to a "plain Jane" locally available option, but I do like the herringbone design.

Has anyone wrestled with this recently? What did you end up with?

the original Dunlop tooling is now with a UK manufacturer of Areospace hose ( Hytex ) they still produce for select customers as and when they have gaps in production , but it is very expensive
they use a nitrile lining making all sizes suitable for unleaded fuels hence the price per foot the herring bone effect is produced by moulding and it is only available in short lenghts 7ft max
original tooling is very worn and some sizes have intermittent pattern on longer lenghts thats why there are lots of short lenghts around and no reels

MCA have also started producing herring bone by a different method wrapping a popriotory hose with soft cord then moulding rubber over that to give the herringbone look
not sure if they use ethanol resistant tube for fuel hose but for oil it will be Ok

I use black cloth weave covered hose, looks the same except up close and a lot cheaper.

Last I heard no one could use the weave machine and thus make the casings that gives the pattern. It is the weaved casing that determines ID. Kommando is spot on with his braid covered hose, which was the original type hose. I believe there is a service release saying that Herringbone could be used as substitute whilst the original hose is not available and typical of the early 70's it seems it never came back in stock, not sure it was for agents at the time so may not be included in the service releases that the dealers and agents had.

Gates makes a nice looking cloth-covered, oil-temp-rated hose and Old Britts stocks it for a reasonable price, around $4 a foot.

I have about 50 meters of this in 7mm for the BMW carb kits; I get it from the manufacturer, and yes it costs me next to nothing. I hadn't thought about ordering any in 10mm, or 3/8. A good lead, thanks!

I would not use that hose for oil!

The argument about this hose seems to crop up from time to time. I don't know if there are cheap versions made but the VW fuel injection hose (also used by Mercedes) is Buna-N, has a burst rating of 820 pounds and is rated to 230 degrees. I have been using it as feed lines for oil to the head and the oil tank for almost ten years. It has not gotten brittle. It has not started to fall apart and it hasn't started leaking.

Looks like the genuine article is on sale in the UK

otherwise known as Shropshire classics
downside is it's GBP 10 per foot, but I'm still using some original stuff that must be 30/40 years old, so you get your moneys worth.
