Battery Tender positive earth

Battery is in the bike with the fuse pulled on the negative side. Does the tender have an issue with it connected in this manner? I have a plug in style connector and the tender I am using seems to be expired but it is old. I am going to get a new one. Is there an issue otherwise connected in reverse?

I had a bad experience with the alligator clips. Dont use them.

If you leave the plug connected to the battery all the time just be aware the the exposed plug terminal is (-) which means if it touchs any metal part of the bike it will short. I put a fuse in the (-) connector wire going to the battery and always make sure the rubber boot is installed when not in use. This is only necessary if you are still positive earth.

The question is... Does the tender still function the same way with the positive earth system. Plus to plus, neg to neg. It would seem to me that it would even with the battery in the bike.

I do it all the time. Plus to ground minus to the battery, fuse out. Seems to work for me.

The positive connector from the tender goes to battery positive and negative connector goes to battery negative just like any other vehicle. Neither the battery or the tender give a hoot about how the system is grounded. No need to pull the fuse. Assuming you have the tender that shuts itself off when the battery is charged, you can leave it connected indefinitely. Good advice on covering the exposed part of the plug on the pigtail. If you have the pigtail why would you remove it from the bike. I have one charger and six bikes. All of the bikes have the pigtails permanently installed. Every couple of days I just rotate the charger to the next bike. However with Motobatt AGM batteries the battery is generally at full charge anyway.

That still leaves the exposed connector on the pigtail unfused and able to short out the battery. There's no easy solution to using the battery tender on a positive ground machine. You have to cut and reverse the leads coming from the tender before the connector, and then switch the leads at the battery too. That should put the fuse on the negative pole of the battery and put the shrouded connector from the battery on the negative side too.

Pull the fuse or install a switch. Check the battery tender shut off voltage vs the zenier diode bleed off voltage value . If the tender shut off voltage is higher it will never shut down.

The pigtail should have a plastic plug that slips over the bare connector. Six bikes, fifteen years, no shorts. You're making it more complicated than it needs to be.

Even more good news: You can plug into the bike based pigtail to run any double insulated accessories, like GPS, air compressor, IPOD, phone charger....n.
