I am looking for a authentic aluminum master cylinder cap for a 1974 Commando. It needs to have the correct writing/etching on it. Does anybody have a good photo of the writing and ideas to reproduce it, if I cannot find one?

I have never seen an etched Norton cap. And I probably have about 6 of them on bikes and in boxes of treasure.
Must be a 1974 only thing, before they went to plastic?

If you can get a decent image of the full text and font, I'd hazard a guess that a local trophy maker shop could make up the etching/engraving for you. I've seen them do great things on all sorts of surfaces, including the curved glass of a 40oz bottle of Wild Turkey whiskey (which I won in a boat race and it was laser etched with my boat name within a couple of hours of the finish) .

Interesting..I have a 74 with the original cap and there is no etching on it.

I purchased my 74 in 1974,I'm the one and only owner and there is no etching on mine either!

My '74, unknown history, has faint etching present...insufficient to make out the words and it is well obscured under the oxidation on the cap. Might improve or be totally obliterated with proper buffing job.

So you guys are saying myself and others with the etched caps have something of collector value, Eh?!

I'll start the bidding at $100 USD.....

I have a NOS cap that I've had since 1974. No etching on that one. I had it stored way in the back of my unorganized attic and hd to dig it out and look after seeing this thread.

Never saw one with the etching either. Could it be from a Triumph?

Maybe an aftermarket cap OR perhaps a cap that was provided/available later by Norton as a replacement cap? My OEM '73 cap is as others have stated - plain with no engraving.

According to the 850 Mk2/Mk2A supplement, the Mk2/2A reservoir cap had a different part number (06-4973) compared to the earlier '72-'73 cap (06-1920) which might explain it, and then again, it might not?

(Plastic 850 Mk3 cap was 06-5740)
