Okay - with so many of you knowledgable chaps out there, someone must be able to answer this.
There is a recess at the lower rear corner of the left-hand side cover on my 1974 Interstate - see circled area below.
Anyone know why it's there?
Cheers

A plastic Dzus fastener for fixing the side panel on an 850 MkIIA.There would be a hole through which the fastener was mounted.

Thanks for that!
No - there's no longer a hole - can't even see where one was.
Funny place for a dzu, given there's that lower "ear" with rubber, 25mm in front of that recess, to locate the cover behind the z-plate.
Still, everything Norton didn't always make sense I suppose.

The 850 Mk2A (and Mk1A) panel had the hole and battery tray bracket for the Dzus fastener.

Edit: If there is a lug with rubber insert then it's an 850 Mk3 Interstate panel which had the recess but not the hole for the Dzus.

Thanks for that Les - It appears that I have a Mk3 cover - where Norton seems to not have removed that recess even though there is no longer any use for it.
I looked at Interstate images online - which supports your case.
Thanks again
