I have pulled the bike out of storage for the winter, tried to start it up and it will only run for a few seconds then die. seems like it will only burn the fuel in the carb and then die. I have fuel to the carbs, good spark, fresh batterie. I have pulled the throttles and slides from the carb and cleaned them. could I have a plugged air or fuel port in the carb?

This seem a little contradictory. Pull the fuel line and petcocks and clean them, particularly the strainers.

You mention "fuel in the carb" as in singular. Therefore I assume a single Mikuni and no need for the #78 drill, of which I believe does not apply here anyhow.

Checking needle and seat would be next in line, or should I say down line.

Pete,
Before pulling it apart, are you using the choke? and try turning on both taps, you might have an air lock.

running stock carbs. I get fuel to both carbs. both taps open, tried the choke open and closed, it will run for a few seconds then quit. I then play with the fuel ticklers and it will run for a few seconds again. I took apart the carbs and cleaned them but now I broke the handle on the tank petcock so need to order some new ones. I will try and make a temporary fix until I get them.

1. Use fresh fuel.
2. Remove float bowl drain plugs then turn taps on to see if there is equal and adequate fuel flow.
3. If flow is poor, trace for fuel restriction.
3a. If using acohol enhanced fuel, check viton tipped float needles for swelling.

I cleaned the jets and slides. fixed the petcock until I receive new ones. Got the bike running, It now it has little power on take off, and bogs and looses power at 4000ish RPM. This weekend I will change the plugs and remove the carbs and give them a good cleaning and make sure the air and fuel ports are not clogged. Hope that will do the trick. I think the problem is my fibreglass interstate tank. I have not seen any good reviews on the new steel ones available so I have stayed away from purchasing one. I may have to bite the bullet and take a chance.

I don't think there is much gummy stuff reaching the carbs but after it sits for a few days it seems a little sticky and I think that is whats causing my problems. I am still using my fibreglass tank until I find a decent steel replacement.

Next time you start it open the gas cap....may be a plugged air vent there - maybe.
