Won't keep running

I have a 850 commando which will start & run only while the starter is depressed
As soon as the starter button is released the motor stops
While the starter button is pressed it will run

Have you taken the plugs out, and checked that there is spark while the starter is not being used ?
Could be a wiring issue.
(Keep your hands well clear of the plugs while trying this)

We probably need more info.
Has it just lately been doing this, or you have never had it running ?

What happens if you try to blip the throttle while holding the starter button ?
Will it rev ?
This may not do the starter much good....

It was running perfect & just suddenly stopped, if I blip the throttle it revs up as long as the starter button is depressed

The bike won't fire or start using the kick starter

(Assuming it is an 850Mk3 and not a converted earlier model 850?)
Points, or electronic ignition?
If points, it could be a bad or broken connection somewhere in the ignition feed, such as a faulty kill switch, (or the kill switch in the OFF position) or, the ballast resistor could have failed? With the original points system, when the starter motor is operating, the ignition (coils) are fed directly from the battery (via the starter solenoid 'WP' wire) and not through the normal ignition circuit and ballast resistor. Under those circumstances, the engine will fire but stops as soon as the starter stops turning.
