Solenoid clicks but my Mk3 won't kick over

I had just put a new solenoid relay on a few months ago.
If the starter motor runs of its own accord then that tends to suggest the solenoid is jamming on unless the white/red from the handlebar switch is somehow supplying power to the solenoid without the starter button being pressed so you could try disconnecting white/red from the solenoid and if that doesn't work I suggest you disconnect the heavy battery wires from the solenoid (and temporarily tape them) and see if the bike runs normally again using the kickstarter.
The fuse blowing could have something to do with the change of handlebar switch unit as the solenoid and starter current don't use the fuse circuit.

The starter only kicked in and kept running when I connect jumper cables and kick started it. Since that occurance I get nothing out of the starter. The solenoid doesn't even click, the fuze just blows when the starter button is pressed. The fuze blows with either the old or new starter switch.

I still suggest you disconnect the white/red from the solenoid connection and see if that stops the fuse blowing.

Okay, will do. If it stops the fuse blowing what then, simply get another solenoid and ride off into the sunset? May it be so!!!

Thanks for your insight. Turns out the connection wire to the starter wasn't crimped tightly and there was a little oil in it as well. So crimped and cleaned it and problem solved, started right up. Now to see if I could have fouled the plugs because it was running really nice just before this debacle, now very choppy, and am so looking forward to opening her up on the throttle as I'm just wrapping up a 200 mile break in period after the top end job. Again, thanks for the help.

This is good stuff to have around for wiring mysteries

Okay, changed the solenoid and still not working. Disconnected the red and white wire like you said and doesn't blow the fuse but also doesn't start either. So not what?

Have a poke around with a test lamp or a voltmeter to see where power is and is not. Start at the input wire to the solenoid...this will tell you if the starter button is sending power to solenoid. If none with button being pressed, then check power feed to the button. If none there than follow wire to the ign switch.
Does power get from solenoid to starter? If yes then there is a problem in the starter itself or a mechanical problem preventing it from turning.

Well no it won't start on the electric starter with the white/red disconnected. I only suggested you do that to see if it stopped the fuse blowing so you need to see if there's a short circuit or crossed wire in the white/red circuit or if the solenoid was causing the fault.

I just tried connecting the two heavy wires from the solenoid and with the key and kill switch off. As soon as the wires touched the starter started turning over. If I were to keep them touching I believe the starter will run incessently. Does this mean there must be a short somewhere else? I've run a multimeter and power is definitely getting to the solenoid just not to the starter. I am going to try one more solenoid but am leery at this point.
