I do a little fixing up and maintenance out in the garage every winter rather than a full blown teardown and resto. This makes it a lot more affordable and wife pleasing. This year is our 40th anniversary and birthday for my '72 Combat Estelle.

Getting started
Winter work

This year's list included sending the head to Leo Goff and getting some of the ugly areas powdercoated. Found a good local guy for this. I won a $50 off coupon for the head work at the Empire Rally - whoopie! As usual one thing leads to another and another. Also decided to have the tach drive modified for the Chicago Rawhide 2450 seal. This will be a freebie from the machinist we use at work. I owe him bigtime.

Head back from Leo.. looks fantastic.

Decided to redo the coil mounting which I did a few years ago but by forum standards it was downright cobby. Coil is a Rev-Tech Harley type. This is an utterly shameless copy of swooshdave's bracket but in 1/8" mild steel. Did a little blacksmithing to bend it. Out for powdercoat with air cleaner parts and front fender stays now.

Got the head on and it is starting to look like a bike again.

A lot of stupid time spent on the coil and fender mounting hardware. I went to stainless where possible. I had to go to metric on some of the washers because I just couldn't get the correct outer diameters in stainless. Be careful when ordering from some of the Norton suppliers. I received much wider washers that I could have just gotten at the local hardware store. These ended up in my miscellaneous hardware jar - not worth returning.

Deadline is April 15 for the Gathering of the Nortons at Washington Crossing, PA. I hope to see some of you there. After that I will rebuild the carbs with stay-up floats, etc. I didn't want to change everything at once and introduce multiple variables in case there are problems.

36,610 miles. Was off the road for about 8 years underneath garage crap after the kids were born. I have 3 other bikes - all Matchless singles - so it was a bit neglected. You're within striking distance for the "Gathering" in April. Why don't you head on down? (Dress warm)

I had a thread on SS washers I got from OB that were standard SAE size a long time ago. I ended up buying a bunch of them from 1/4" through 1/2" in custom sizes from McMaster. Whole bike washers cost me about $30 and some people whined about what I did, but I got what I wanted, plus they were thicker than the SAE stainless washers you get these days (they're rather thin) and they had the correct outside/inside dimensions. AN or USS washers don't work either.

I am living in Montgomery County and would be interested in attending. Could you please post some details of the Gathering? Thanks in advance.

The DVNR website is hopelessly out of date and the current flyer for the event is not there yet.

Details are:

19th Annual Gathering of the Nortons
Put on by the Delaware Valley Norton Riders (INOA chapter)

Date: Sunday April 15th - raindate April 22nd
Time: 10am-2pm
Place: Washington Crossing Historic Park, Washington Crossing, PA
Food and drink (non-alcoholic) available, some vendors, club table

Directions: From the intersection of PA routes 532 and 32 (This is near the bridge to NJ), Take PA 32 North approx 200 yds then turn left into the parking lot marked by the big flagpole. I might add - Obey speed limit and watch out for cops.

Basically it is a low-key parking lot event. Walking around drooling and kicking tires. All kinds of bikes not just Nortons.

Thanks for the information and I hope to be able to make it. It looks like a fun Sunday.
