I do a little fixing up and maintenance out in the garage every winter rather than a full blown teardown and resto. This makes it a lot more affordable and wife pleasing. This year is our 40th anniversary and birthday for my '72 Combat Estelle.
Getting started
This year's list included sending the head to Leo Goff and getting some of the ugly areas powdercoated. Found a good local guy for this. I won a $50 off coupon for the head work at the Empire Rally - whoopie! As usual one thing leads to another and another. Also decided to have the tach drive modified for the Chicago Rawhide 2450 seal. This will be a freebie from the machinist we use at work. I owe him bigtime.
Head back from Leo.. looks fantastic.
Decided to redo the coil mounting which I did a few years ago but by forum standards it was downright cobby. Coil is a Rev-Tech Harley type. This is an utterly shameless copy of swooshdave's bracket but in 1/8" mild steel. Did a little blacksmithing to bend it. Out for powdercoat with air cleaner parts and front fender stays now.
Got the head on and it is starting to look like a bike again.
A lot of stupid time spent on the coil and fender mounting hardware. I went to stainless where possible. I had to go to metric on some of the washers because I just couldn't get the correct outer diameters in stainless. Be careful when ordering from some of the Norton suppliers. I received much wider washers that I could have just gotten at the local hardware store. These ended up in my miscellaneous hardware jar - not worth returning.
Deadline is April 15 for the Gathering of the Nortons at Washington Crossing, PA. I hope to see some of you there. After that I will rebuild the carbs with stay-up floats, etc. I didn't want to change everything at once and introduce multiple variables in case there are problems.
