Well while pulling apart my P11 engine..... [Yea I know its not Commando] but it’s the same animal when it comes to the Norton heavy Twins.... Here is a good example as to checking your sludge trap in the 3 pcs. Crank of the Norton.
Why you need to check your sludge trap!

Don’t assume its clean.
Why you need to check your sludge trap!

Another note to what happens when the DPO forgets to put a cheap but very important cir clips where it should live.

Both were missing on this cylinder. It makes me sob. :( Mainly because it’s now mine. Now I got to deal with this puppy. if it cuts to less than +40 then I will consider myself lucky.
Always expect the unexpected.

CNN that's the filthiest scuzzblob I've ever seen. Opened up my Crazy's after purchase to find only 1/4 inch of dense compacted powdery grey fine stuff. But that looks like a public health issue for quarrantine. As for the circlip grooves I want you to get plenty of sleep this wknd. so you can be fresh at work to pay for the big rebore and pistons. No Nuite Blanch nonsense. You got your work cut out. :|

What needs to happen when the mess is cleaned up and reassembled and torqued up.
Does the crankshaft need to be dynamically spun to check trueness?

Not really. Just pay the local teenager who needs a few extra bucks to clean up,protecting journals and crankshaft drive and bearing ends of course from any scratches. Looks like Ebola to me. No isolastics on that. Center for disease control to be notified. :|

Looks like a lot of water got in oil but before jumping to conclusions and scrapping it all out, check to see if the oil path is still clear. Deposits like that can not form in a running engine which slings anything heavier than oil into layer on the oil hole side of crank, just like Tonto found. Still I know about pigs in a poke so everyone should always tear down to the core and work back up.

Edit
This engine sat on a floor for a long time and was siezed up solid. I always tear down all my engines to the beginnings and bring it back up. I have seen too many DPO's dumb maneuvers or ingenious botches. The scuffed pushrods was the first indicator to this engine's sad history. With a little care I think I can get it back to what it was intended.

Ha Ha, isn't that kinda like saying look for the middle aged guy in blue jeans?

With the can o' beer. Dress warm it starts at 8 ,over by 3. Hiking nearby Niagara escarpment Bruce trail afterwards with Ont. Nort. Owners Prez. Manse and his dog Ricky. Let's hike.

Well it turns out to be not as bad as I first thought. It cleaned up nicely. I am still going to get at the rust a little more with evapo-rust and make sure all my passages are clean and clear. The throws were good no sign of wear. Just a little discoloured. I will just polish them when I get to my Machine Man and he can look at my barrel. I might be in the market for a set of JS motorsport pistons and con rods. This might work well with the Matchless framed P11.

Oh and L.A.B. you can move this to Other Norton's if you think it should go there.
Cheers.

Tom, I am surprised that your washing machine could clean it up so nicely set on REGULAR. I would have thought you would need to use HEAVY DUTY........

LOL Thats why there is still the rusty bits.
Makes a hell of a racket on the spin cycle!

Based on my own experience, I'd say that the JS piston / rods direction would be a great idea. I would still strongly suggest having the whole package properly dynamically balanced though, mine needed 6 x 1/2" diameter holes putting in it to bring it into dynamic balance, and I'd very confident putting this set up in a solid frame mounting.

I thought about the JS pistons and rods, but every time I think about it, I get the hives, the money doesn't bother me and I'd like less vibration. Realize it changes the rod/rocker geometry from what I understand. And that entails another project. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Every time I do a 'upgrade' that's not just a better seal or bearing, it's 'the gift that keeps on giving'.

Only thing that changes push rod rocker valve stem geometry is changing the stack height by plates/gaskets or milling and/or another profile cam so JSM kit will add that excuse. You only live once and done right once is enough. Still I'm softly isolated happy with everything still factory via beveled front iso cushions and side to side mass pretty close.

Just to confirm, we're talking pistons and con rods here... Not pushrods. So no effect on rockers etc.

Well here is the results of rust removal using EVAPO-RUST cleaner.
I purchased another 750 commando barrel with some rust in a standard bore size.
I would have to sleeve the original barrel and I don't want to go down that road.

I will have to open the head to match the Commando headbolts on either side of the sparkplug.
Its not a bad alternative and it will be stronger.
