Why not shockproof oil in TTI boxes?

If you have got a low inertia crank with multi-speed CR box and a vicious motor, the theory might be good, but you can do yourself a very big mischief and quite easily. With the Commando crank, everything happens slowly enough to be safe. Four-strokes are not two-strokes - with a two stroke, the motor is usually very top end, so unless it is revving well up in the power band not much nasty happens. With a four-stroke which has much more torque, if you get it wrong - the bike can tie itself into a knot and launch you. What I really like about my Seeley 850 - it is not nasty, but still fast enough to win. The trouble with this stuff is that if somebody warns you, the thought is always there that they might be a dud rider. It is relatively easy to build a bike which will scare you shitless and make you go slow.

Hi Nige

lee had a bad one at the Ulster. Rehab, retired from racing, this was a fair few years ago. Although he may? have raced this year, although I dont know the specifics, just a coment off Ken on the CRMC site.
Lee was the man, I have one of his North fairings (purple & yellow) built like a brick shithouse lol. I slid down the track on oil in the rain at Cadwell at 30mph & wore through the casing on a triple. Fairings are a practicle thing. His sponsor in 501 unlimited was a lovely man but I dont know the engine spec. I believe crank weight has a great effect on feel & how hard you can push a bike. 5 gear or 6 then comes into the equation.

Chris
Sorry to hear that about Lee, although a big off for him was always inevitable really. He was the epitome of a Mr 110% or nothing !

He should have gone on to bigger and better things I think.

.....I think some R5 Yamahas had 6 gears with the 6th gear locked out, until the motor was operated on.

Not quite, it was early RD250/350s that had that. I had one of the first batch of RD250s imported to the UK, had to ask the dealer how many gears it had and we could only select 5, but it was later confirmed there were 6 in there!

They had been delivered in the US with all 6 available, somehow Yamaha didn't think it would be a problem that you could be wide open in 6th and change to 1st!

It is quite strange when you first ride a bike with 6 gears, but you get used to it very quickly. When I raced the T250 Suzuki, I was very apprehensive that I might pick up first gear in a second gear corner and drop the bike. But after a while, it was never a problem. You get used to the view of the corners and the sound of the motor.

Back to the shockproof oil... I have a 1966 BMW R60/2 with the appropriately named "crash box" transmission. I used the lightweight shockproof oil and it went a long ways towards making the shifting smooth. I would pay $50/qt for results like that.

Buy it in Europe and you will!
