Anyone know why Bruce specifically says not to use shockproof oil in his boxes?

I heard a rumor that he didn't like to clean them up when he had to work on them when they were using Shockproof. Don't know if it's true.

Well mine is a long way from his shop so that is a bit hard to understand.

TTI boxes do use a lot of needle bearings and tight tolerances. It may be that Bruce is worried about the ability of Shockproof to get into tight places. Is it quite thick. [85-250w]

I know I will not be using it. Jim

Sounds good for standard box though or am I missing something?

Perhaps good for shock and less good for lubricity.
Ive always used 80-90w in my TTI.
Just for something to worry about is shock on a gearbox
that is innocent of any shock absorber. Well, meaningful
one for pre MkIII.
As soon as the TT100 on the rear is illegal Ill mount my
Madass made rear hub and see how it goes.

I have a TTI in my race bike, Jims rumour is true as I spoke to one of Bruce's technicians when questioning them about the right oil to use some years back.
I use shockproof in my 4 speed AMC in the road bike, although I am using FUCHS Titan in my TTI as I had a tub of it and until the rumour was verified, didnt know any different!!
Regards Mike

So, we are ok to use Shockproof then ?

Still strange that it is now a few years since TTI gearboxes became in fairly common use and Bruce has told at least one
that a lighter weight modern oil can be used. I suspect for street use it doesnt matter so much compared to race use.

I think you’re right. The TTI box is so robust that you could probably put olive oil in it and it’ll most likely outlast you or me on the street!

It’s just that I use Shockproof in all my bikes boxes (except the 961 cos it shares its gearbox oil with the primary and clutch... duh...).

I started using it when having some gearbox issues when racing and have stuck with it since. When you strip a gearbox that’s been run on Redline shockproof, even if it’s been stood for months, every conceivable surface is covered in the stuff. Race boys report zero wear when using it. I like it!

OH ALL RIGHT...Ill have to order some up and try it out.
Perhaps it will be the only substance on earth that can enable
an Enfield Albion box to survive.

I use 80/90w for more as 50.000 kms now, I open the box a few weeks ago and still looks brand new!
When I was a sidecar racer I broke a lot of Quaifes and Shaftleitner, but this box where made for engine with 50HP and not the 100 Hp from the König
The only issue I have was to polish the outside cover from the TTI
If I can save the money, I plan to buy a 6 speed TTI this winter
Yves

I felt the same way with the unpolished cover. Rest of the bike glows in all its effulgent glory. And then I regretted not getting the Magnesium box just because it looked great. Now you go and start me thinking of a six speed! Perhaps for street work the jump from top to fifth wouldnt be enough to use as a passing gear and it would end up being a bother. After all, four speeds with the torque of the 850 would be fine although Im quite happy having five gears on the road.
