Which shock absorbers?

What? A leak on your shed roof and the roofer won’t come out till TOMORROW...

Doesn‘t he grasp the urgency?

Dining room. 8pm mate. This week has been nice weather, of course. Southerlies tomorrow for a nice Antarctic blast. Saucepans out.

My son in law is a roofer. I once had a leak in my garage roof. The little shit had a look for me and saw a loose nail. That's all it was and I had missed it. I have replaced all nails on our roof now with screws.

Go look for that nail. Not always easy to find. Anothe r time many years ago, we had a slight leak into our bedroom. couldnt find anything wrong so tapped every nail. [ fixed the leak. ]

Shingles. I have been up there and cant find anything amiss.

Went for the first ride with the new Ikons this arvo. Did the coastal route, Matauri Bay, Tauranga Bay, Purerua to the end of the tar seal, then to Opito bay and back home. Went wel. Too early to tell how much better the shocks are. Still wants to drift in the tight corrugations coming out of Matauri bay but cant expect any better in that stuff.

Had a lot of trouble starting the bike though. Got a few spits then nothing. Took the plugs out and they were wet. dried them and refitted with no difference. Fitted 2 new N7Y plugs and was a bit better but still tended to die after a couple of revs. Kept doing this about 10 times then slowly came right. Because I have no chokes, and the bike is set up for economy, I have to jab one of the ticklers a couple of times to keep it running in these colder conditions. That didn't work at all today. I suspect there must have been some unknown blockages in the carbs to cause what happened as it normally will start 1st or 3rd kick. I cant think of any other reason, as the spark was perfect and the fuel smelt ok. [. I ran the engine for about 4 mins once it started and then s;ow;y let it come down to idle, which it did until I turned it off. Put the bike away again as I was about to take my wife out to lunch . Got back from lunch, got the bike out and started it first keick. Turned it off, got all my gear on, started first kick again and it started perfectly on 4 other occasions during the ride.

What do you mean, under steer?

On corner exit?

If so, decrease your rebound damping from 2 to 1.5

Hi David. I was probably being a bit sarky about the road conditions [ Wainui Rd area south west of Mahinepua ]. That road has quite a few tight corners with rough surfaces. I will bare that in mind but do a few more rides before changing it. I didn't realize there were 1/2 settings.

All the best.

I didn't realize there were 1/2 settings.

On 7610 Koni's its 1,2,3 or 4, leaving it half way blocks off the rebound route so not advised, I assume 7610 Ikon's are the same and the parts diagram I have shows the same 4 damper holes. The earlier 76 series Koni's did have infinite settings between lowest and highest, there were about 2.5 turns of adjustment and you could go 0 to 2.5 in the smallest increments you could move the shaft. It was a spring off, compress the rod until it engaged the bottom slot, then turn, so not user friendly like the dial a ride but not stuck with 4 settings.

Ok, i was not aware of this so looked at the Ikon site and you are correct.

"The adjustment disc must be snapped exactly into its adjustment position, and not left between positions."

Oops.

Just checked and luckily mine were clicked in at 2 which seems good for me at 96kg For sporting solo riding

As circumstances and/or load may require, you may choose from the following 4 positions (clicks numbered 1-2-3-4) :

  • For very smooth damping under modest loading.
  • For solo and pillion passenger use on average to good roads.
  • For sporting solo riding or for use with pillion passenger and luggage.
  • Heavier adjustment than strictly necessary for use with pillion passenger and luggage.

Cool. Look at the pages i posted on p.6 of this thread and how rear rebound dampening affects things. And hit that road again. Make it your test bitch. ;)

Thanks Dave. I just printed those pages out. I noticed Jan's comment about non chromed springs. I agree. i dont like the chrome body and black springs but what the hell. this bikes a rider not a garage queen. Have to wait a couple of days before riding again because my matured shape, and some past scrapes, have caused the [ 2nd ] zip on my 49 year old leather jacket to blow apart. I'm getting one of those heavy duty ones normally fitted to boat awnings. No matter what I do, running for an hour at a time 2-3 times a week or even riding my push bike, i cant seem to slim down. I do like beer though, and I'm not giving that up.

all the best.

Should have ordered the ones with the black body and chrome springs. I got those.

Well here I am once more just over a year since I originally asked the question. In that time I’ve now covered just over 1000 miles on our wonderfully potholed roads using NJB shocks.

They certainly work, go up and down as you’d expect. exactly how good a s/a they are I really do not have the expertise to tell you, but they look original and don’t have an advertising brand label on them showing they’re a replacement - that matters to me.

They are very slightly longer than I was expecting ( or my Avon Roadrider tyres are larger diameter) because when it’s on the centrestand the rear wheel almost contacts the ground. I know the stand and pivots are not worn. It’s a minor detail but makes rotating the rear wheel to lube the chain a bit awkward, but it’s not a dealbreaker.

I’m pleased to have had them recommended to me on here.

I keep a 1/4" aluminum plate handy to slide under the mainstand, gets the tire up off the ground.
