Where does the excess pressure oil from the relief valve flow?

After I did some work and replaced the timing cover gasket, the oil pressure relief valve suddenly did not hold the oil
pressure from going too high when the engine was cold.
I pulled out the valve and put in a decent used one and the problem still remains.
I think that it may be the the new timing cover gasket is missing a hole for the excess oil to flow out of the cover. But before I pull the
cover off, can someone tell me where the passage with excess oil pressure flow leads to and how I can check it is clear
I want to be able to check that it is not blocked if I find that the gasket did have a hole.

It returns oil to the inlet side (iirc) via a drilling in the engine case.
The Mk3 cover returns it to the timing chest.

Is the drilling straight through to the crankcase so I can look into it for a plug, or does it turn?

The drilling is straight back into the feed side gallery so when the OPRV is releasing extra oil it short circuits back to the feedside of the pump. That is except for the MK3 and an AMR anti sump valve converted engine where the crankcase is blanked and an alternative route is put into the timing cover releasing the excess oil straight to sump.

I take the timing cover off today. I hope to find that the gasket lacked a hole to allow the overpressure oil to go back tot he feed side.
