Looking for a set of tires, whats the best 19"ers I can find, handling, ride etc

Not racer , road

There used to be a company in the UK which specialised in tyres for vintage bikes. I cannot even find 18s of the right size. They do not even need to be trick compound.

Having tried three different brands over the last 23 years , i am now on my 3rd set of Avon Roadriders .. These are by far a much better tire IMHO. Better handling and extended tire life .. You won't be disappointed .

Al I suspect the company you are referring to is Vintage Tyres:

If you’re looking at 18” for your Seeley, and if we just look at Avons, you have several options:

Actually the most common set up for a bike like yours is an AM22 front 110/80/18 and AM 23 rear 130/650/18. Or AM22 110 front and rear if you don’t want the wide rear (lots of 500s race this combo).

Or, as Ron suggests, there are several 18” Roadriders available in road compound (race compound Roadriders aren’t available in a size to suit you as they only offer a 90 section):

Personally, if your going on the track Al and wanting to push on a bit, I’d strongly recommend race tyres. I’ve used Roadriders on the track a lot, and in perfect conditions they’re fine, but in less than perfect conditions they can be scary, as I was recently reminded !

ordered these

Perfect choice sir !

Just make sure your tyre fitter understands arrows… the tyres are fitted the opposite way from front and rear. I always mark the rims with a big ‘sharpie’ saying FRONT or REAR and put big directional arrows on them and circle the relevant tyre arrow in chalk and ensure I tell the fitter personally.

I know it sounds anal, but I assure you they’ll fit one wrong sooner or later if you don’t do similar !!

Or fit ‘em yourself. I HATE fitting tyres, well, actually I hate pinching tubes and damaging rims !

Hi all, previously I used TT100's a 410x19 on the rear and a 100/90x19 TT100GP on the front of my previous 850, the thought behind it was the slightly narrower 100/90x19 on the front would help the bike "point" better. Om my Mk3 I have 100/90x19 Roadriders front and rear but have recently become aware that Avon also produce a 325x19 Roadrider, the 325 has the same width as a 90/90 but the height is halfway between a 90/90 and a 100/90 i.e. will "fill" the mudguard better, has anybody tried this combination?

I had a 3.25x19 ME33 front that I ran in the 90s along with a 410x19 Roadrunner rear. I was happy with the combo then, but I thought the back tire was the weakness there.

Now I am running the 100/90-19 and 4.00-18 Roadriders. I am much happier with this version of my bike/tires, but the bike itself is very different - not just the rubber, so not apples to apples.

Hi Dave, yes I am familiar with both as I used to Rep for the NZ Dunlop & Metzler tyre Distributor. What I am interested in is the use of a 325x19 Roadrider on the front as I feel should point a bit better with out having the big gap between guard and tyre with a 90/90x19 front. I just feel that with 100/90x19's front and rear your cornering is not quite as precise.

I run the 3.25 on a couple of bikes and they seem fine.

But they diameter is smaller, so you’ll be running a slightly smaller front wheel vs rear. You probably won’t notice though in reality.

On the Commando I run the 100/90/19 front and like the wider tyre for confidence in its increased contact patch for cornering and braking.

If fore and aft are the same you can rotate front to rear when rear is ready for the bin. However that requires more tyre mounting. The front never wears out it just ages so you don't have to do it every
time you toss the rear.
Must admit I too am a bit fearful of a skinny front when it come to clamping on the binders or navigating the turns especially on iffy surface.

got the tires mounted, boy what a difference new tires make, no more hands off head shake( that got me thinking I needed new tires as the bike was always real stable), BTW no yellow or red dots on these. Balanced real well.
