What's new ?

What I really like about it is the race class is so sensible. We get to see the top guys at their very best. Even MotoGP does not do that.
Nobody needs to race at 200 MPH. A Manx or a G50 are fast enough to sort the men from the boys. The guys on the twins did OK.
At that last corner - if I had come upon that, I would probably have backed-off. Josh Brooks got straight in amongst them.

I have to hand it to the Poms - they really know how to do the historic thing. I was at Goodwood in 2007 and watched Wayne Gardner win a race.

Too much fun. Plus they sound really amazing.

I like watching MotoGP. I have not watched for a few years and watched the Aragon race last Sunday. 217mph on the straights is mind numbing, and the lean angles. I don't think it's that easy to get in the show. Also nice to see Ducati back at the front.

I think with MotoGP, it all comes down to balls. All of the bikes seem to be on the same angle of lean, so their handling and power delivery are probably very siimilar. So there are probably not many ways of gaining advantage. When you see those guys riding the old stuff, you see what they are really made of. When you race, you should not scare yourself shitless. I don't think you ride a MotoGP bike - you aim it.
Have you seen Whiz-Norton Racing - banned for being too fast ? - It becomes ridiculous. The adrenalin rush would be horrible. It affects the liver and causes cholesterol to be created.

I personally can't comprehend what it would be like racing a MotoGP bike anymore than I can comprehend what it would be like in a current F1 car. I would need a balls transplant and about 45 years taken of my clock.

It’s much more than ‘just’ balls.

People who race at the top level on modern machinery have different brains. Their perception of speed, processing time, decision making speed, reaction times, etc are just on another level. An abnormal level.

I read once that it is similar to when a normal person is in something like a car accident. Most of us who’ve been in one say the same thing “time slowed down”. It didn’t of course, what actually happened is our brain changed the way it perceived time. And that’s similar to the state Hamilton et Al brains are in during a race.

No idea if it’s true, but it sounded plausible to me.

Different kind of balls. Highly precise and evolved balls.

Rednecks getting shot out of homemade canons have balls. They just aren't too smart.

Did you say "et Al" or was that supposed to be "et all" ;)

There's a pretty interesting book by David Epstein called "The Sports Gene" that goes through some of the known genetic differences between elite athletes and the rest of us. Some are obvious while others are not. Very good read, but I'm not sure there was any mention of testicle weight.

You only need to watch the video of Guy Martin hitting the wall at the TT, the giant fireball, him sliding down the road a LONG way, and when they got to him thinking he was surely dead, he was telling them not to cut his leathers! Then in another race he came off and his flight ended in many broken bones. When interviewed later he said of course he will keep racing once healed.

If it's balls, I don't know how he walks - they are so big!

If you haven't seen it:

Adrenalin changes the way your brain functions. I once delivered a lecture to a professional institute. When I started my talk, I froze for what was probably 3 seconds. To me it felt like 10 years. My ex was in the audience, and I asked her afterwards whether she had noticed - she hadn't.
I have had a double by-pass op and three strokes - probably due to high cholesterol - adrenalin causes that when it affects the liver. So I take a beta blocker.
The machine creates the rider. If you need to be brave to race, you have a problem. Mike Hailwood started racing with a 250cc Mondial world championship winner. Not some piece of crap.

The way Guy Martin talks makes me nervous. I don't believe in him.

I think winning is kind of important to elite athletes. Driven to be the best. The balls thing is obviously not about testicles. Lack of fear and the confidence to do things others don't have the will to do is what it means to me. I'm sure somebody will twist that around and say it has got nothing to do with being an elite athlete.

Al, you're being contradictory about balls, since you brought up balls in the first place. What does it mean to you?
