I've had 4 bad animal strikes since 2005, only one after dark.
1st, deer, going low 30's homeward on Gravel, $1000+ to Combat + almost died on spot, took seasons to resolve.
2nd going 10ish mph to not excite dog pack chase by prior speed lead by Great Pyrenees, $1000+ SV650 and pieces of me.
3rd, dropping to 75 to look at tire while a tad leaned to turn, deer hit foot went under rear, next focus was blue sky ahead. Cost nothing just chipped teeth out and shortened radiator hose and my fractured foot was mild bother a few days.
4th. recent goat killing coasting down hill Gravel mid 30's, $1000+ SV650 dead and Festus walk half a week scabs just about gone.

My conclusions. A. is never go slower than 75-85 to avoid side strikes, even after dark. B. I can not keep two wheel craft intact in my conditions. I've not listed the run off roads by man or nature or stops on my nose saves that hurt-cost d/t no way to keep from falling over right where I stopped. or doing fine till debris encountered.
My dilemma, lose the time-investment-adventures in motorbikes I'm already way past point of any return or adapt to reality and really have a blast with Norton torque and Snorts, hunting aggressively the big bucks! I creep after dark through Elk and Hog country, Elk don't leap wildly, easy to avoid, Hogs rush out and if not completely maimed they return to eat attackers, crippled by crash or fallen backwards in shock hunters, especially so with a train of piglets tagging alone.

Which chassis should supercharged race built 920 torque monster go after it tried out in terror in my linked isolastic 'Commando'
These have reclined seating but seem too loose for handling side slopes or loose stuff. Looks cool though.

This one handling appeals but would need roll cage with animal deflector-splitter blades affixed some how.

Maybe a compromise blending reclined leaning version, could shoot right under Elk tripping them by not bother me or trike.

Hmm, this one is like the man power recliners which use principle for rear steering effectively.
It don't have to be this complex thank you, both ends don't have to tilt for effect.

For those who like to spoof me, check this offender out for those who can't stay upright : )

brother Hobot,
I would respectfully suggest fitting something like a sawed off shotgun on your bike, mount it to the handlebars, with a linkage to the trigger and (especially) the safety attached to your left handgrip side. It would take some machining, but I'm sure it would pay for itself. Please ride carefully!
cheers,
Don
(edit) and most likely 100% legal in Arkansas....

I dig that Ducati based leaner. That would be the best for adaptation to what you already have in my opinion.
For the more standard style I have to push our local maker http://www.campagnamotors.com/#
But why not try to build a Gator style Norton. I think the engine lends itself well to the recumbent two wheeler. Dan Gurney s original design with the Honda single should adapt well.

Will

Don, realistically and practically no projectile weapon can do a thing to protect from animal strikes. THE Only animal encounters that hurt are those from the sides. If you even see em its about like dodging an arrow you can see coming.
OH I've given your ideal plenty of thought but too many other warm moving objects get in front to trust a motion or IR or sonic or radar or laser detector trigger. Can ya picture me pulling up to a friends home and their bike educated dogs come to greet me. Heck I could well picture me getting off and walking around front forgeting to un-arm. Also just killing or blowing some leakis in big game don't do a thing to prevent the ballistic collision or hitting a pile of muscle and bone. I'm putting paint marker machine guns on, for real, but not for much protection, mainly to laugh my tail off spattering deer into the Gravel and getting them out the way quicker, but those get out the way any way and just fun as you can not hit a deer on purpose by a human aimed vehicle. Peel has run them down or deflected them so they hit stuff and feel down a bunch of times.

Will I think I've every type of tirke by now and Campanga is a body style I like and would love one in a city and fairly level open road area. Just don't think non tipping front tires will work as well as titling set. I'm wonder though if a fat sport car tire that stays level to surface but front tires lean might be best of both worlds. What I really pictured has two inline motorcycle wheel drivers.
Right now I'm in limbo comming to grips with facing road fates naked or w/o a risking a real motorcycle. May have to take up hard drugs and married women or cave diving or base jumping.

I No Longer take my SV650 onto grass but creeping speeds. I like to cruise around on isolastic Combat on seas of rolling green pasture, feels like boating, but rear linked Peel is only bike that invites me to Steve McQueen rooster tailing hauling ass and catching good air in hay fields. THE G is very hazard filled so unless feeling very very lucky I just cruise it barely on a good plane, minimizing tire wear with some reserves to avoid stuff as any brakes out of the question.
I could slam on trike brakes or even kick its 3 tire side ways to slow up 'quick'.

How would ya mount a kick start? I am torn between front, mid or rear engine.

you beat my animal strikes, which consist of:

1 deer at 60 mph on a highway in fog and mist at 4 am (don't ask!)

1 porcupine while going around a turn (they are greasy little devils)

1 crow at mid -chest (like a Mike Tyson jab, I assume)

dozens of bees in helmet, shirt, jacket, with corresponding # of stings

1 Honda Accord

But still not enough to make me think I should stop riding or worse still, get a 3-wheeler.

At least no cows, bears, or moose (yet).

Keep on riding.....

Hogs are a hazard in my Madison Co. too. Hit one and not kill it and you die.

One of my Commando adventures involved me in ditch to watch one of these being captured, end up between my tires and boots making me dance to save boots and tires, teasing it one way and next, kicking it when I could as its jaw straddled tire onto the spokes about to fold wheel rim over. I tease thee not, Peel and I almost lost lower parts. Someone helped tease it to side of bike, hit with axle handle inside jaws to SNAP on then pulled so I could walk on other side bike away.

I want something I don't need to balance or put a foot down to prevent damage.
Two inline wheels are my love and joy but seems must restrict it to track safety.

hobot, imho, it is best to stay away from the hard drugs and married women. around here, like Arkansas I'm sure, there's plenty of other, more healthy distractions... like great weed and unattached girls, both of which you may find worth the trouble... and money, hehe

I've got something that might help. It's a bit heavy at 170lbs and a bit long at 8 feet, but the recoil will work better than any super-duper brake and boy does it clear a path.

Cash

Hot Damn! Cash, we think alike but more practically I figured 4-6 double barrel 12 ga on crash bars going off at once would be worth a handful of mph off, maybe even 8 with 2 stacked on the fender.

Don, I'm a pig like most normal men, temptation and opportunity are constant facts of life in my work I constantly must put out of mind. Thank goodness when I look and listen close I stick with who I've got at home and not complicate life and karma as prior. In back of mind is concept of the Wyrd and Karma, still thank full so far pay back has been survivable - after a while - just like past women entanglement injuries. There is something to be said of spending on parts that last longer than what spent on other long list of thrilling vices.

Kieth, deer have been found like 4x's denser-stronger muscle mass than a horse, so our deer strikes leave lasting impression.
Crows weight like 5 lb and also densely muscled to compute its Pow ft-lb imparted. The 2nd deer that hit me going 75 really injured my psyche, as much as if lightening hit me twice, I realized that no matter how safe with constant self talk riding I did I still get taken down HARD. My 4 serious hits are just tip of ice berg of close calls of crisis reaction to ride on intact. Most events are less than a second about the time it takes to involuntary squeal as brain witness what the spine cord is doing before brain has anything to say about it but AGGGGHH!
Then I instantly re-set for next out the blue crisis. I really don't like to ride anything but Commandos so very tempted to just sell off SV as is. Pretty much ready to race if junk removed and resets put on and oil catch tray. Only thing I couldn't out ride on it was Ms Peel, ugh with scary extra corner speed and acceleration advantage. I had nausea for 3-4 days afterwards, d/t the pressure on my neck nerves, gritting teeth on reality sinking in and seeing deer coming at me from every side even the trees over head.

I could easy arrange to just swap Peel blown big block between 3 and 2 wheels.
But Peels accidental half Combat configuration accelerated competitively fast to over the ton. I've a good part of that set up on hand and really and truly think a blown 920 is over kill on drive train and any need of the extra power but to shoot up to who knows how fast in the short opens. Even on linked Peels there is just so much torque a far leaned tire can take. So the picture I'm getting for daily commutes through thick and thin, blood and guts, is Commando cockey engine mounted front and center as show piece in the breeze ala Morgan-ish.
But for sure it will be framed to see in robust steel tube-plate chassis cage.
Best I think I can fabricate for 'body' work is corrugated roofing tin ala, Ford Tri-Motor airplanes. Lexan windshield that can flip up or take off, when brave.

Handling I want and must have is identical to dodging off road edge down 3 ft tall drainage berm in an off sloped sweeper covered in layer of marbles and arrow heads - then nailing throttle to break rear loose letting gravity weather vane it down slope to get bike mostly sideways to travels and keep roster tailing enough to slowly stop the down hill drift begin climb out still sliding side ways till front hops edge berm then rear for instant high side that flings whole bike in line with road way upright and hooked up out of there. More freaked out angry riding than
terrified fear, till some time later. With a trike I would not have to balance so athletically not to put a foot down like flat track-supermotards-MX's do.

At my Ricochet Rabbit Riding Range, the graduation test is to ride to the nipples of the pair of breasts, two mounds a few storied tall, about perfect domes, one paved the other Gravels. Students start out at base facing tangent of the rim. Goal is get to top and not fall down. First to the peak gets a tattoo.
Bet ya a titlting 4 wheel trike, can take em all on.
