What to do about the frame ID plate when repainting?

What does one do about the red plate on the frame head tube when repainting the frame? Do you remove it then somehow rivet it back on? Do you just cover it and paint around it? Do you replace it with a brand new one? In this case, you'd have to restamp the original frame number, which seems somewhat disingenuous since you would thereby have a "matching" bike if you didn't have one to start with. None of these options seems particularly appealing to me. What's the lesser evil?

I knocked the old on off with a cold chisel, drilled out the old rivets then mounted a new ID plate once my frame was refinished. I stamped the new ID plate myself here at work. I know on 850's there is a serial number stamped into the head tube of the frame. It is right beside the ID plate so there is no way to fake it as the stamped number in the headtube is clearly visible. At least that is how it is on my MKIII.

They are normally only drive screws so you should be able to remove them paint and refit with new screws ,they just hammer in,do the frame and tag numbers normally match mine don't but every thing else does :?:

tried to remove mine...first screw popped out, second ripped the plate lol... just ripped the whole plate off and bout a new one. They're only bout $10 at oldbritts. Old had completely faded to silver so the new red one made 100% change in appearance :D

I figured why mess around with trying to save the old one or save the old rivets so **** it and I bought a new one. Like Pelican said, it was only $10.

If you mask it, you will probably pull the red off. Best way is to paint it in grease before you spray. Remove grease with white spirit.

My basket case came with the original plate in the paperwork, and a new plate with rivets.

I keep the old plate with the registration in a watertight bag in the side cover.

Huffer,

Grind off the rivet heads then punch what's left into the stearing head tube. Replace with a new plate and new "rivets".

You don't say if you have a 750 or 850. Watch as the plates are different. Also 750 frames have no stamped numbers while 850 frames have a year code on the left front gas tank mount such as 06-4140 ('73 frame). Some 850 frames have an Fxxxxxx stamped into the headstock tube which may or may not have been used for registration. These we the frame numbers for the frames Norton outsourced for a while.

illf8ed, I have an 850 with the Fxxxxxx on the tube. Does this mean I have an outsourced Italian frame?

I did exactly as illf8ed suggests. Don't buy your plate from Norvil - they want you to send them your old one first  to destroy.
Once you paint the frame you won't want the doggy old one back on!

I'm glad I saw this. I was going to send my old plate to Norvil and hopefully get a new one stamped, but I can get one from oldbrits for a 10 spot and get it stamped at the local machine shop. Good Idea.

Yes - according to the NOC in the UK. Mine is a '74 850 with a F****** Italian frame (reads more than one way ;) ), and contrary to popular opinion it is made from Imperial tube sizes, not metric.
