What is the proper why to mount the oil tank brackets to the frame cross-members on a Ranger?

Greetings All,

I'd like to get the consensus of the group on how the oil tank brackets are attached to the frame on a Ranger 750. Some folks seem to like to "sandwich" the frame cross-member between the "clamps" of the brackets. Others prefer to have all of the bracket parts below/behind the cross-members. Is there a "right" or factory way, or is it just a case of go with what works?

BTW, is there a protocol for fitting the tank that makes the job easier? I presume one always starts from the rear, with the rear wheel dismounted. Which bracket is engaged first? Etc.

Cheers, Norm

I think most of the guys would say trial and error, I know it's not easy. I vaguely recall the brackets made a sandwich of the frame. Basically as you say, go with what works. Just make sure there's enough clearance all around so the oil tank can't touch the frame while running. The early alloy ones were prone to failure anyway. Removing the swing arm (can be another tough job?) might make it easier too. Good luck, Jer

I have a PDF file of the Norton service bulletin which gives fairly detailed directions. If you PM me your e-mail, I can send you a copy. I have never figured out how to post a PDF on the forum.

The tank goes in from the rear with wheel and swingarm removed. It is possible to leave the swingarm, but it makes it easier. I have also often found it necessary to carefully bend the battery side of the tank or move the battery tray outboard (or narrow it slightly) to assure sufficient clearance. Of course, if the tank originally came from the frame in which you are installing it, you should not have an issue. Installing an NOS tank will likely need massaging. Installing an India made replica could also, I have no experience with these.

As Jerry says, it is most important to assure sufficient clearance with all frame tubes. In some cases you may need to sandwich the brackets and others mount both brackets below or above the frame tab. Depends on the tank and frame. I always test fit the tank to the frame prior to paintwork.

Thanks, guys. Exactly the information and advice I was seeking. Went together quite easily after a little fiddling and good spacing between the tank and frame all-round.
