HI all,
It looks like my two year old Boyer Digital Power unit has failed again. I'm bitterly disappointed as I've been a Boyer fan from day one. I still have one I bought in 1975 and it still works fine. However, if this latest loss of sparks is indeed the Boyer I'll be on the market for another make. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Cash.

I just got a Pazon because of various recommendations i've heard. It's part of a total rebuild so i have yet to run it, but the build quality looks top-notch and installation instructions don't leave anything to the imagination. 7.5 year warranty is hard to beat as well.

I have boyer ( mk3) on both my commando and my BM racer. Never had any problems so long as the battery is good. They don't like low voltage which is often caused by bad wiring, corroded switches etc and blamed on the boyer.
I have heard that the digital ones need a good cranking speed to get them going. You need a strong right leg to make sure the engine is turning over fast enough for the ignition to realise it should providing sparks.

I've found that with the Digital Power unit set up correctly starting is very easy. I'm vertically challenged with bad legs and a motor with 9.5 : 1 compression.

I first fitted another stator, still no spark. Then fitted my old faithful battered, bent and cracked black box with a jap twin output coil, and big fat sparks crack out on every kick. I'll tape that lot on 'til I get a reply from Boyer.

Looks like its either that little coil that pazon might also use or the blue box.

I've got a soft spot for Boyer as I reckon the majority of problems aren't caused by the Boyer equipment but poor setup, and still the Boyer staff are helpful polite and professional. In a nutshell they're great people. But, what if plans had worked out and I had been touring Norway. What then? Do you know, points have their problems but you'll usually get home. I just want reliability.

Cash ,

i just installed a trispark in the commando having had significant success with the Trispark unit in my triple ... works really well though i do not have much in the way to compare it with in a commando as i have only just (sorta ) aquired this one ... starts first kick with kick start at half mast .. and runs sweet .. the bike did over 200 miles at the weekend without missing a beat .. can use 6 or 12 volt coils as well ..

Thanks Steve I'd got it in my head trispark was for Tridents only.

nope twins as well ... have one fitted to an A65 as well ....

I will try not to sound like an advert but i am just so happy with the Trispark hard not to ...

best thing is no wasted spark (fires each coil individually) .. spark time is about 10x longer than boyer or points, advance curve is consistent on every box unlike some of the competitors solutions, and finally it takes almost no power which allows me to run a 100W halogen up front without draining the battery and causing misfiring ...

lastly pre and post sales service is superb , curtesy

Nicely done on ALL fronts, cash.

This ignition subject might run on a bit, as well it should. Lots of debate out there about the subject.

Bought a Boyer, quite a while ago, but haven't installed it yet. Then I became convinced I should "Ebay it off" in favor of a Pazon, which I've never heard anything bad about. Now I learn of a different make, Trispark, which, I take it, was originally designed for the speed triples? Otherwise why the "Tri" part of the the name? Cough, cough, eh gads. I'm confused. Also, no mention of the cost of the price of the system on their website.... or I just missed it(?).

I do have a personal stake in this. I have either purchased and/or already installed these items: a Boyer ignition, a Dyno 12 volt coil, a Tympanium rectifier. My bike still has the original Lucas single phase alternator. Don't want to hijack in any way the post, but wondering what folks think about this set-up? What I'm reading lately is the hi-tech folks are going Pazon, a 3-phase alternator (Sparx), and having NO regrets.

wrench, still designing his wiring harness....

Steve,
How much did you pay for yours? no one will give me a price.

The Tri-Spark system was originally developed for Triumph & BSA triple engines (nothing to do with the later Hinckley *Speed* Triple you mention) by Steve Kelly, as Boyer ignitions, when fitted to these three cylinder engines do not perform particularly well, fouled plugs and bad starting being common problems mostly due to the fact that the Boyer system has to fire three coils together each time instead of two. The Lucas Rita ignition was a marginally better performer but still required 3x 4V coils to be fitted to get the best from it, the Rita system has also been out of production now for sometime so had become generally unavailable as a new fit system.

I've been running old faithful over the weekend and hell what a difference, the blue box must have been faulty from new. Anyhow, I received a new blue box from Boyer today. I'll fit it tomorrow and let you guys know how it goes.

I have the trispark on one of my triples and love it. Steve, wasn't aware the trispark was able to be used on twins. I will be checking it out for a few bikes.

This is an e-mail reply from trispark....for a 75 commando.

"damhik@verizon.net"

Good morning Gavin,

I have the Tri-Spark units in stock. The basic unit is $275.00. I also have the 5 Ohm resistor caps ($3.50 ea) or you can easily source them yourself. And if you are using 6 volt coils I have the required ballast resistor ($10.00). Shipping via USPS is $5.50.

Thank you for your interest.

Trispark now makes a twin version, (Bispark anyone )

Looks like Gavin has it covered as I was writing.

Cheers.

Well Boyer sent me a new box and I fitted it this evening. I left the stator where it was as old faithful was running great. It started OK but needed the choke for a long time and lost the tick over when hot.
Think I'll be refitting old faithful until I can get someone to sell me a trispark. Everyone is on bl***y holiday, b****r.

I've not tried a digital Boyer but I agree with Cash's sentiments about the earlier ones.

I have replaced Boyers a couple of times usually because the wiring and connectors were getting a bit tatty and it seemed to make sense to then carry the old one as a spare. Each time, I have ended up refitting the original (after tidying the connectors etc.) due to erratic running, odd misfires and poor starting. Boyers have said several times that they could find no faults.

My "Old Faithful" Boyer Mark 3 has the old South Norwood address on it and must be about 25 years old. It has never missed a beat apart from the usual external wiring weak points. :?

I too feel a certain loyalty to Boyers, not least because it didn't involve using a ghastly spun cover like the RITA but I'm thinking of a Pazon next time. I'm a bit worried that a Tri-spark will cause six-stroking on a twin :)

I'm worried Pazon is just a Boyer clone with a couple of nice mods. I asked Pazon where their producted bettered Boyer's, they didn't tell me. :?

That's slightly surprising?
Did Andy respond?

Perhaps they are also on holiday?
