Triples sure look good in anything but such a headache to care for. If just window shopping swapping here's what would look great and go like stink and really confuse ones brand and national loyalty.

What engines fit in these frames?

I didn't say it wasn't possible, just not worth the effort. Then again I'm a bit of a purist. If your going to do this, why not start with custom frame and build from scratch instead of ruining a perfectly good Norton. Look for an engine.

BTW, I like Hondas. I have six of them, but from a value standpoint a Honda Sabre in a Norton would not be worth much. You could buy 50 old Honda Sabre's for what the Norton would be worth if you did it right and original.

I have no problem with modding bikes. Check this thread, which is my 1987 Honda Hurricane that I converted to 2003 CBR RR. It's still a Honda BTW.

Seen this one in person a few years ago. The builder started from Commando rolling chassis...

The Hillman Imp ( late ones ) being worth nothing , wouldnt be a bad idea . Being a Hansen / Mundy ( Jag V-12 & Coventry Climax designers )
if you kept it tidy. They used to put Saab 2 stroke triples % Sq 4s in F'beds too . The Suz 500 looking thing is the Wulf , so a old Titan Engine would shake less Isolisised too . :lol:
 
Why would you use the isolastic frame if it wasn't for the purpose of taming a big twin cylinder motor of it's low frequency vibes ? The trident engined bike looks lovely, however why would you bother ? - I ridden standard tridents , and the vibration was bugger all. If I wanted a good road bike with performance using that frame, a big Wessie would be the way I would go. It would be cheaper in the long run than a commando motor.
It might even be better using a 1942 Indian 1200 motor, and a 6 speed TTI gear box. That would better suit the style of the frame. (Sloppy motor in a sloppy frame.) Peter Williams could ride it at the next Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Will a BSA Bantam engine fit into a MK3 Seeley frame ?

These make a surprisingly capable bike.
This one is obviously featherbed based, but there is more room in a Commando frame, and taking the tingles out could make for a very relaxed tourer.
Obviously these are in a different world, but cruisers are popular these days, we hear...

How about keeping it a Norton engine....only an upgraded aftermarket Norton engine sourced from the now available suppliers. A dream engine if you will. One with beefed up Maney crankcases, crank shaft & alloy barrels. Jsmotorsports longer connecting rods with lighter pistons, also Jims light weight radiused cam lifters and cam kit with behive springs and titanium keepers. topped off with a fullauto cylinder head and a pair of new Amal Premiers from the access Norton store right here on this website. add in a set of stainless steel peashooters and exhaust from commando specialties and Whamo....a unique powerplant that bolts right in and should be plenty quick you can choose 850,920 or 1007 :)
 
just takes money and time then some more money and time to get some return pay backs. Realize you can only spend so much on a real Norton engine, so must face facts that over 60 hp it won't be much of a parts numbered Norton engine left.
Drive train cost start to soar after 70 hp level.
45 hp engines costs about 4000.
50 hp costs about $4500
60 hp about 6000
70 hp about 8000
80 hp about 9500
90 hp about 11000
100 hp about 13000

It's true value would be a lot more if it was fitted with a well built commando motor, and looking very standard. If you want performance buy yourself a VFR 400 Honda . It would be quicker and handle better than any commando ever did. What you have is probably worth restoration to become something beautiful.

That is an odd choice of a performance bike, if ever there was one ?
They are sold in most markets as learner bikes, with not enough go to pull the skin off a rice pudding ?

Reminds of the time Wayne Gardner was a guest commentator for a race somewhere.
Ever the Honda spokesman, he was waxing lyrical about the smooth precise Honda V4 something - as a pair of Ducatis overtook said rider, one on the inside and one on the outside. Both the Ducs wriggled and squirmed under power, as they cleared off into the distance.
Next lap around, on the same corner in full view of the camera, said V4 spat the rider off into the grass, as the Ducs had roared off into the distance.
Wayne didn't do a lot of commentating after that, apparently the network (and all the viewers) thought that was hilarious... !

Probably out there on uTube someplace.
 
Well I remembered when Wayne switched from bikes to V8 car racing back home, earned himself the nickname of 'Captain Chaos' for the havoc he used to cause at Bathurst!
Not surprised to hear him making that commentary :)
 
He was pretty handy on that race bike of his, it must be said.
The factory loved him - in the endurance races, when he or the co-rider decked it, he got up and went like a demon to win.
More than once...
 
Oh no doubt him and fellow aussie Mick Doohan were good riders, only shame none of them had a go at superbikes, where a match, specially Doohan vs Foggy would have been the race of champions!
 
Pashaw, If you want to embarrass moderns up over 140-150 mph contact Bruce McGregor to buy his tested long term Drouin Supercharge for bolt on 58%-ish increase in torque horse power acceleration ability. But better first put on the triple links to handle the excessive speeding into and out of sharp turns that give the terrors to them fat tired moderns. Keep it as Norton as practical-possible to get about half as much as you put in, instead of 2/3-3/4's of investment. The only thing that keeps its acceptably Norton Commando is the cocky canted engine and the isolastic mounting plus the mellow power sounds.

My Favorite Norton combo is Combat 10 CR and 2S cam with standard small port head and 2-1 headers and mega for some hang on tight spunk as cheap as it gets.
