if you had to replace the assimilator to your Commando 750, what would you take?
will you go on ebay taking an original old one, or better going to a newer one?
If it is the latter, would you have any particular preference in the brand and type?

I would get rid of it and all related wiring. One less demon to worry about.

+1
I have one of those multi colored LED's on my combat. It is small, light, simple and works well. I will be using them on all my bikes.

I used this from Cool Cat Express on my bike (since sold).

Here's the link.

It's made for jaguar cars, but (as they say on their webpage) works for all sorts of vehicles, including bikes.

 Giggle... Just for fun take one of those tin can thingys apart with cutters to see how it works. A P.O.S. springy of a-lew-min-ee-umm canister points relying on heating- cooling before wierdness kicks in. Fascinating. What were they thinking ?

Both my Combat came missing the assimilator so was confused no end for a while figuring out what was wrong with mine, then relief I didn't have to mess with em. The small completely solid state LED vom is the way to go for informative glance if ya on charge or discharge side of draw and can compensate with throttle and gear to stay mostly in the green range after red running for one reason or another. There is also this bigger version if ya like...

Those things used to be known as idiot lights. My 1970 model has an ammeter. To paraphrase Groucho Marx "that's good enough for me".

Replace it with one of these. The LED fit into the holder in headlight.

What size is the hole in our genuine lamp shells.
I am away on the road working right now, so I can't run out to the garage to measure.
I might purchase one of these for curiosity sake, and give it a shot in my project.
you could even go as far as to call this one a "super idiot light"........ :D

The hole in my shell is 7/16" or 11mm in French.
I have the 10mm LED fitted. Mine had a black plastic mounting sleeve so I filed it down carefully till it fitted the hole then fitted it with a small cable tie round it inside the shell to stop it lifting out.
