I consider the lubrication advice as creative thinking; if you have the correct gaiters they will never go on from the bottom, or if you do manage to force them they will be so "blown out" that they will never seal correctly.
You got to drop the fork tube/slider units which will give you an EXCELLENT opportunity to change the fork oil and do an inspection of the triple clamps, your cables and wirimg harness, at the steering head.
Make sure that you have supported the machine properly, you may want to consider bracing the center stand so that it cannot retract and/or tieing the handle bars into your workshop's ceiling so that the machine can't colapse on you.
With the right fork assembly out of the machine you can re-torque the triple clamps ( probably never been done--like the fork oil change!!!) easily; your handeling will thank you, do this leg last.
