want to install gaiters

hello all i have a 75 mk111 want to install some boots on my front forks i know 75 ,s didn't come with this but i like the looks.how do you install these? do they slip on from the bottom or or do you have to disassemble fork assy.? Also what year would be the best fit?THanks M.c.

The MkIII model would have had either the short "dust boots" or the full "gaiters".

Your choice really. I'd usually drop the fork legs.
I think I recall one or more of our members saying they managed to install the gaiters by pushing them up over the sliders using lots of lubricant?

I installed a set of the Old Britts ones by dropping the fork legs out of the triple tree and installing over the top end down. Hold em in place with cable ties.

They look good and protect the fork seals. I highly recommend 'em.
 
Long, short, thick, thin vasilene will get it in...

I consider the lubrication advice as creative thinking; if you have the correct gaiters they will never go on from the bottom, or if you do manage to force them they will be so "blown out" that they will never seal correctly.

You got to drop the fork tube/slider units which will give you an EXCELLENT opportunity to change the fork oil and do an inspection of the triple clamps, your cables and wirimg harness, at the steering head.

Make sure that you have supported the machine properly, you may want to consider bracing the center stand so that it cannot retract and/or tieing the handle bars into your workshop's ceiling so that the machine can't colapse on you.

With the right fork assembly out of the machine you can re-torque the triple clamps ( probably never been done--like the fork oil change!!!) easily; your handeling will thank you, do this leg last.
 
I have had problems with the Taiwan (EMGO) replacements splitting at the seam when trying to fit over the fork seal retainer. I suggest getting the "genuine" Norton variety.
 
I have a MK3 with "fork gaiters". They must be installed over the fork tube and then over the slider. Mine are a snug fit and require zip-ties only around the for tube - not around the slider.

thanks guys for the heads up on installation. I guess if i'm going to drop the the fork tubes i can clean-up the yokes and check the head bearing and that rats nest of a headlamp hareness.I looked at the work shop manual how hard is it toget the tube to slide out of the yokes. my forks are in pretty good shape so i don't plan on disassembling the tubes from the sliders. THanks M.C.

They work just fine My directions recommend there use.

I can't speak from experience (and thus probably should keep my mouth shut, but hey, I'm American....) but I would think so. I have a Telefix brace on an airhead RT with gaiters and they work fine on that one.
