Heres my basket case to racer R90...chosen mainly due to its solid engine, reasonable parts prices and underdog status...

Done two meetings on it , first time ever racing, soundly beaten by the Nortons, Guzzis and sole 900ss...but had an all week buzz and even one an race. :D
Already planning the 1000cc big valve motor...
Norvil fairing was worth lugging around for 20 years....

I had a similar idea with this R60/5 I found that had been dropped on the left side, totalling the head; got it fixed and running, but decided to build my Bonneville instead...

Just found a 79 R80/7 on CL. Trying to go see it tomorrow.

Found this while researching, looks right on for a German.

With disc brakes instead of drums and telescopic forks instead of the leading link "Earles" type, they're not really vintage. In the UK, it used to be that "Vintage" was pre-1930 and "Post-vintage throughbread" was applied to models of some distinction between 1930 and about 25 years before the current year.

Picked up some damaged $ 25 Norton Peashooters for my daily ride, the $1100 R65.....
They fit perfectly and amazingly the electrics still work and it don't leak oil
They sound really good...then anything sounds better than a stock BMW exhaust.

Frank, You are absolutely correct in the strict definition of the term "Vintage", however all true vintage BMWs have leaf-spring front suspension similar to the Indians of the same era. BMW were one of the first, if not the first, manufacturer to use telescopic forks in 1936 and only changed to Leading link or 'Earles' type front suspension in the mid 50s and then were back to telescopic forks by the early 70s.
