Anyone have a method for removing the VIN plate without damaging it? I am planning on having some welding done on the headstock and then having the frame sand blasted.

Grind off the head of the domed rivets then punch what remains into the frame. New rivets are available when you want to re-attach the VIN plate. I did this in '98 when I powder coated my frame. Also put a new VIN plate on as the old one was faded and smashed where a PO clamped (likely) a fairing mount.

Just to back up what David says, they are fitted with Hammer-Drive screws which are pretty hard. No amount of tugging and turning will pull them out but if the head is gone, they're quite happy to be driven in further.

If you want to save the plate, I'd suggest using a suitably drilled mask to protect it while you grind the screw head.

Another option is to cut screwdriver slots in the rivet heads using a dremel. Then you can just unscrew them. I did that on my 750 when I restored it. You have to be careful not to cut into the ID plate of course. Some duct tape or a masking plate would be a good idea.
