Hi All Being old enough to remember a new Commando owned by a friend I can't recall the engine noise being "tappety", I have checked my clearances as per manual a couple of times but still get a tappety sound.

Park next to a modern 961 Commando. Problem solved !

Seriously… tell us more about your bike, age, model, condition and your experience with it…

Sometimes the valve ends can be worn into a small pit by the tappet and therefore using a feeler guage to set the tappet can leave too great a clearance.

In this case the best method is to use the thread pitch of the adjuster set the clearance. If you don't know the thread pitch of the screw use the feeler guage to determine the distance for a complete 360 rotation of the adjuster. Then calculate the amount of turn you need to get the clearance your after.

I expect the threads are 26 TPI in which case a full turn is about 40 thou. So a quarter turn is 10 thou. But I would check.

I be more worried if they didn't make a tappety sound, some are quieter than other and some are even louder, if the bike is starting OK and running good then just enjoy it, even new they made a little noise.

Yeah watch out for spammers. Especially in the classifieds section. At the moment I changed it so anyone can post an ad. I will change it back so only VIP members can post ads. To help keep them out (will do it next week). As always, let Les or me know if you see this activity..,

Solid lifter valve trains are sort of hard to get used to sound wise. Most 4 stroke motorcycle engines still in production have overhead cams, which are way the heck quieter.

Fun responding to somebody that got banned. I don't have to explain myself. 🤣

I wonder what the evidence was for which he was banned ?- his post looked harmless to me. Was he selling something to stop tappet rattles - grease ?

A friend had a 600 Domi which was very quiet apart from a mildly irritating tappet rattle, and he wouldn't rest until he'd chased it down.
If turned out to be a scarred rocker spindle, and it sounded very mellow afterwards.
I had a T150 at the time, and it sounded bl**dy awful by comparison 😬

On my Bsa b33 592cc , I had some oiling issues to the top end , not enough oil, and at least 3 times my exhaust valve tightened up and that let's the lash cap come out ,it always sits behind the spring , but she will still run with an extra .080 valve clearance , but still quiet ! , but the exhaust note is completely different, and it has a decent loss in power won't rev too much , get you home power ! Valves dont touch piston low lift , big valve pockets . Oil is well now ! 😀
