Hi All

Being old enough to remember a new Commando owned by a friend I can't recall the engine noise being "tappety", I have checked my clearances as per manual a couple of times but still get a tappety sound.

Can anyone confirm that, in good nick and state of tune, Commandos have this sound as a standard?

A Commando in good order witha standard cam shouldn't sound tappety. Wear in the cam follower tunnels though will give a lot of clatter at the same tempo.

They can make a horrendous noise but go on for years like it. It's not a "death rattle" :)

New followers are a cure as they usually need lapping in.

Vince,
A small dent can compress in to the top of the valve stem. The feeler will bridge it and give you a false setting. A slack cam chain can rattle in time with the tapets too.
