I had a heck of a time getting my regular (MOPAR) valve spring compressor to work on the Commando valve springs / rocker boxes. I finally had to make up a cylinder with a window in it, but the whole contraption was pretty wobbly. What are you guys using ?

Greg

I use one like this:

It is basically a large "C" clamp with two inch and a half pieces of steel plate welded on the upper jaw. Actually mine is cast that way, but if you have a large enough clamp and a welder, one could be easily made.

I have a Lisle automotive compressor also, but as you have found out you can't reach into the valve spring chamber. The clamp type is smaller, simpler and works like a charm.

Mine is like Ron's, but it's Red.

I've done umpteen Norton, Triumph & BSA, and one KZ1000.

My compressor is also the same as Rons only a little rustier. & just to give you an idea how old the design is, mine was handed down from my Grandfather, so that dates it to at least the 1920s, & its worked on pretty much every bike & car engine I've worked on since I was 16.

Which is appropriate as the Norton engine design is from the 1880s...

After buying a couple different models of spring compressor I decided I just didn't have enough hands so I made this several years ago. I'll never go back.
It's just a brake spring compressor sans handle and a rubber donut on a stud that fits my cheap arbor press. Jim
