Valve Cover Gaskets

I'm another fan of the orange silicone gaskets. On race bikes the covers are off and on all the time, and the silicone gaskets stand up to repeated use better than the stock composition gaskets. On my street MK3, I still use the stock gaskets.

Yes the thick Chevy Orange silicon gaskets are a permanent re-usable no mess solution. There is no need of a gasket anywhere in Commandos but the TS cover to provide proper squish of oil pump nipple. Nope not even a head gasket needed to seal, just to set clearances as needed.
Waldrige I think sells them, but likely other vendors as long known nice solution as leave a nice red pin stripe instead of oily blurry paper seam.

Has any one thrown the gaskets away and just used sealer with any success??, concerned they might be a pig to get off.

I use "Right Stuff Grey" Gasket from Permatex for my valve covers and it is absolutely oil tight.

Just use a paper thin application and removing goes very well.

Inever bought a rocker cover gasket. Just cut them out of thin breakfast cereal packet cardboard thin smear of gasket goop. That's it, no problems. It's not a space shuttle...........

You can say that again

PS The shuttle probably wouldn't have blown up with cereal box gaskets

I am using the ones from Stan at Rocky Point. Great product, zero oil leakage from valve covers.

Plus, I like Stan a lot, he has been a stand up guy to me on his Norton parts for many years.

Ditto. I sure would wish he'd get a damn phone number for his new place though. I need instant satisfaction and none of this waiting for e-mails stuff.

The phone number for Rocky Point Cycle is on the website's front page. I sent you a PM

Bill.

Hi
Used Jeans idea & brought a cookie sheet . Probably too thin but the covers are still on & no leaks. This is the second season & they have been off a couple of times. I have enough material to cut another 2 sets.

I have had good results with rubberised cork sheet. It is about 3mm thick and most auto shops seal the stuff, and or bearing houses. I first used this on a Trident rocker box cover, they are notorius for leaking, cause they warp reall easy with ham fisted PO's. And they make great Cmd rocker gaskets also. The trick is to only lightly seat them and use either RTV or blue Locitie on the nuts, but don't over tighten and you can re use them a coupe of times, but as others have said, make sure you are accurate with your cutting inside to not make oil reservoirs, especially on the low side of the exhaust rockers.

Cheers Richard

I've only ever used standard gaskets and never ever had a leak. Put the motor together properly and it WILL be oiltight. I can do a seasons racing without an oil leak...and that includes reusing the rocker cover gaskets when I check the tappets after every meeting!
