First you apply for a provisional which allows you to view up to 12" screens (or black and white only) without supervision, but you have to go for the full license within two years.. If you elect for automatic tuning you can't use a manual set unless you upgrade....
:-)

What about the license for my pet fish Eric?
Only if he's considered 'dangerous' (and an inspection would be needed at your expense too)

(Must be in contention for 'furthest derailed thread??' Imported motorcycles to pet fish via TV licenses in less than four pages!)

I think it's ridiculous.

On this side of the pond every pub and restaurant has multiple flat screen TV's. Some sports bars can show any game playing in any sport, and they pay the cable companies big premiums for having access to all the sports networks. I can't imagine what a "license" would cost for that over there.

As usual I am as envious of the cheap price of your tv license, as I am of most anything.

Sorry, it was a Python (Monty) reference. There was also a cat detector van from the Ministry of Housinge.

Establishments open to the general public that offer TV programming in the US pay additional fees for the additional service. When I chose a phone/internet provider for Rocky Point Cycle I asked what the additional cost would be for a basic TV package, keep in mind that RPC is a one-man-band, I was told that, because RPC was a business, I would have to purchase a "commercial" package, the additional cost was outrageous (+100/month). All I wanted was access to the news, as biased as it is in the people's republic of Massachusetts.

My wife "owns" the TV in our residence; sometimes I have to "schedule" the content I like to watch to avoid nauseating BS like "90 Day Fiance" and the like. But, here's the rub, with all the providers she has signed up for (+phone and internet) the monthly bill exceeds 250!!!, and, you guessed it, the invoice is loaded with state and federal fees and taxes.

Wifey has the challenge of deciding which of the 9000 feeds she wants to watch; think I'll just go riding.

Might just be less expensive in jolly old England?

Best.

I am currently sat in my motorhome (RV to you in the colonies ;)) watching TV free of charge from broadcast fees. My home address TV licence allows me to view here where I am 150 miles from home. Tonight I decided not to bother using my satellite TV and access hundreds of free to air channels and am using the local TV broadcast via an aerial as the local mast is barely 2 miles away - excellent reception at that range. When I travel abroad in it I’m dialled into the same satellite as in the UK and the broadcast footprint allows me to receive ‘UK’ stuff in all of France, a fair bit of Germany, Switzerland and a little in Italy. I can receive these with a FreeSat transceiver that cost me barely £60. My Sky TV box for encrypted channels at home is not supposed to be used outside the UK, but also works on the same Sat TV dish. The same FreeSat box will also receive all ‘free to air’ transmissions in Europe and the Satellite receiver on the roof has all the satellites stored in its memory and can be set to seek for foreign stuff as required.

it’s all too much to bother with, so I’m not actually watching the box and it’s churning away in the background while I do useful stuff, like answering various fora.

DVLA frequently don’t do joined up thinking. A member of my motorhome forum applied a couple of times to get his home build conversion of a van to be a motorhome. He did everything required, side windows, table, fitted bed, kitchen, WC, awning, decals - and they rejected it - no reason was given or forthcoming when they were questioned. They’re like a bunch of ‘let’s screw up everybody’ dictators.

he has now just repeated his application, 3rd time, but this time added a decal of a window to the other side of the rear doors, so now it looks like 2 windows and added an extra decal to the bonnet.

3rd time lucky it seems. Now it is a motorhome it will be cheaper to insure, and be allowed to travel at 70 and not 60 on major roads , unlike a simple builders van that it’s based on.

They do it because they can and aren’t answerable to anyone with any power.
They are answerable if you get your MP involved asking questions!!

Wish I had good TV reception where I live in the UK. I don't have a satellite disk but use a tv ariel for the High Density TV channels and Freesat , I have to retune the TV, sometimes several times a day cause the H D output is crap I just don't know what to to do except concede defeat and purchase a satellite disk.

Re. DVLA, I moved house last summer, and had to change addresses for car / bikes / driving licence and did most of it on-line. It all worked well enough and updated documents turned up in a couple of weeks. I tried to change the classification of my T140 to 'classic', but found it was impossible to get beyound the recorded messages on the DVLA phone line. I had to go to a 'main' post office to sort that out and fill in the appropriate forms, but the people were helpful and the process worked.

I also had to renew my passport, and found the on-line process worked well. A photo in the machine in the local Co-op does suitable photographs and creates a reference code and the passport office picked that code up to use the photo.

Some government stuff works well. Whether thats efficient or creepy probably depends on your political stance.

I am ~25 miles from the local TV transmitter, but high atmospheric pressure can disrupt reception and the (Panasonic) telly constantly wanting to automatically retune itself, and some channels not working, is a nuisance. A Humax freesat box works well when UHF reception is poor, but wont work if there is heavy rainfall.

Bernhard, I have really good TV reception. The HD output is still crap. :) The DVLA are run by Grant Schapps' department. Good luck with that.

So, if I’m following this thread correctly…

Grant Schapps is now running the DVLA and they’ve screwed up peoples television reception …?

This thread was enlightening, entertaining, and very sobering all at once. California has some shit where you need to keep paying tax on old cars (non-current registration, not being driven) off the road.
We're a few steps behind the U.K., but they appear to be trying to catch up.o_O

Doubtless as our Govts' coffers run dry they'll be scouting for new targets..

Some states have really crazy taxes. I used to own a Condo in Ocean City, Maryland. I live in Virginia. When I sold the Condo, besides all the normal closing costs there was the Maryland special F them if they don't live here tax. I had to pay 8% of the selling price because I didn't live in Maryland. No, I didn't rent the place out - if I had I would have had to pay Maryland Income tax and still pay the 8%.

Washington, DC keeps trying to get congress to approve a commuter tax. The majority of Federal Govt. workers live in Virginia or Maryland and pay no income tax to DC, so DC wants to charge them for coming to the city.
