Ugh, not a good day, but no wreck

Since there is no warranty on the coil, I pulled it apart and the wires just fell right out of the terminals like they weren't even soldered on. Everything inside measures fine, so I'm going to put it back together and use it as a spare. Not very good quality from Emgo. MAP didn't have any others, so I had to order another just like it. Anyone know where good 6V coils are available at a decent price? I'd like to keep the Lucas look.

I'm looking a Bosch BS00016. They are for a VW Karmann Ghia, but I'm trying to figure out what size they are. They're only about $35.

Anyhow, I repaired the dead coil. I now have spark, and am thinking about looking in the other one to see if it's just as bad. It wasn't that hard, had to solder some extensions on the leads, clean the old solder out of the terminals and re-solder them back in. Used a small hammer to crimp it back together with some silicone in the crimp.

Hi Dave I'm glad that you're making progress. As for me, I don't want to keep "a Lucas anything", and will be going with Oldbritts new EI. ....Do you thing that the EMGO terminals got corroded? Cj
 
Corroded, no, they were only 8 months old. When I pulled the top off, the wires weren't even soldered on the terminals, they were probably just touching and over the winter got loose enough that with 4 hits, they separated. I cleaned off the wires about 1/4", tinned them, but they were pretty short in the terminals, so I soldered on an extension and made sure they pulled through as far as I could and re-soldered them. The central connection (HV) is a spring loaded one, not much to do there. I'm tempted to do the other one just because I know what I do is probably better than when they came, even if the crimp doesn't look factory.

If it's not too cool tomorrow I may get it out to try it. I'd like to see if the carb jets and new slides make any difference.

I would also be inclined to try Trispark coils.
In the past I've had excellent service from German PVL 6V coils on all my Brit bikes - they were sold as cheap aftermarket, but I always regarded them as a superior solution

Glad you got the problem pinned. If it was easy anyone could do it ;)
 
It's not mine, a fellow was wearing it and I had to at least get a picture. If anyone wants to print some I'm sure they'd sell, I'd like one. And so I don't cop flack, my norton has all the original Lucas switches which work well. Graeme

Well I'll cop flack instead then... my bike started cutting out on Sunday, and it was quickly traced to the ignition switch - once I turned it to the lights on position I was on my way again.
The switch was a brand new Lucas one fitted two years ago :/
Their aircraft switchgear is much better!
 
Bought a couple of Lucas 6V coils from a nice fella on the forum, but also got a new Emgo one today since I couldn't find others easily. At least this one looks like the wires from the primary side are pulled through the terminals, I can see them sticking out and bent over and soldered. I'll have to check my other one too.

There are so many pages of good info it's hard to tell what is a reposting and what isn't. Anyway, some years back Mike Taglieri posted up on the INOA mailing list how to fix the Lucas ignition switch. Once upon a time I even had photos, but seem to have lost them. I did the fix to what appeared to be a dead switch and it worked for several more years.

Not sure of the protocols of copying here, so if one were to hop over to the Captain Norton archive and look here, there is a text description of how to "fix" the Lucas ignition switch.
 
I guess it's not to late to update this thread. Finally warmed up enough this afternoon to get the bike out on the patio, drain the sump. Installed new main jet I messed up last week. Installed tank, refilled oil tank with sump oil, tickled and it started first kick. So I guess the dry plugs were misleading. Kept it up around 2500K, watched for oil coming back to tank, put seat on, and by now it's idling real nice at right around 1K, no idle dip with throttle, some popping coming off revs, but still not warm. Ride it up the hill to garage and decide I can just go on down the hill and down the road, so go for about a 1 mile ride, back up hill, and park by garage, now it's idling at about 1500, so adjust down to 1000. Still no rpm drop coming off idle. And it's idling real nice. It's idling and coming off idle better than I ever remember it, and it doesn't feel like it's just going to quit at any given moment, even take hand off throttle, no more backfires. Great.

Other thing is the Hemmings adjusters seem to have helped with the shakes. It seems much smoother now. May just be they're easier to adjust, I have them set at 0.01 to start. Tank is rattling on the main tube, so I need to mess with that.

Now need to put air filter back on so I can get it out on the road to check out the new brakes. Looks like it's going to be in the low 70's until Wednesday.

Happy camper so far. Wife came home and didn't even notice the bike in the garage. Went to Orlean VFD for ham and oyster dinner, so now I'm full.

Hey Dave,
I have been following along and I am glad to see you sorted out your issues. I hope you log plenty of problem free miles this season!
I got to say I am curious if VDF is the volunteer Fire department, and even more curious about the ham and oyster combo? How are they paired together and is that a standard dish in your part of the country?

I think it's a country thing here in Mid-Atlantic. Yes, Volunteer Fire Dept. Of course the country (salty) ham as well as honey ham, and both raw and fried oysters, all you can eat. When we started going in the 90's it was $8, and now it's up to $22, also canned beans and corn with boiled potatoes. People bring dessert too. I wouldn't order it at a restaurant, but it supports the FD and I do like the country ham, I don't eat oysters unless I'm drunk. They must have had at least 500 people there from 4-8pm. People come from miles around.

Today I put the air filter back on, which for me means taking the tank and carbs off again, not a big problem. Put another piece of pipe insulation under the tank and that solved the tank rattle. I think I'm going to get rid of that nylock nut for the front tank studs and put a standard nut and a jam nut on there, it's just too much getting that nylock off, and it seems to come off a lot. For some reason today I'm just wiped out, I think my heart/cholesterol medicine sometimes makes me feel real weak and that's how I'm feeling today, otherwise when I finished I would have taken it out, it's a beautiful day, low humidity and about 61°. Maybe tomorrow.

The rubber washer under another metal washer under the tank mount should be enough back push to keep regular nut on and allows easy twist off as ugh, so often needed by some of us.

Meds and foods and low pressure fronts can suck ones gumption down but usually its from too much neck strain on the Phrenic nerve level of the brain stem that also dims brain blood flow. Hits me in waves now and then but no longer draws on a whole day anymore, but ugh, sure as shit could next time something about breaks my little neck again. Off to turmoil on mower to clear chores before Trixie gets her fair share of energy.
