There have been many discussions re tyres so I'm sure this has been said before but....
Just changed 20 year old TT100s, tyres I swore by in the 70's and 80's with brand new Road runners.
You may as well have given me a new bike - diffrences:
Feels lighter and more nimble
Gone has an easily induced weave over 65mph which I had attributed to worn shocks and isolation needing adjusting.
Rolls smoothly into corners more easily
CONFIDENCE!
Should have changed them a year ago when I got the bike.
Cannot compare tyres, just the age.
Read a post about someone considering keeping 25 year old tyres.
All I can say is don't!

Interesting post re new tyres, thanks

I've read several that didn't have nearly such happy endings, so well done you.
I had a tube in an old tire blow out, just sitting in the garage.
Although it was only to get it mobile, no intention of riding it like that.

When i got my MK3 last year it was fitted with Avon AM18 and AM21 tyres. They still had enough tread for a another 1000 miles or so of use but i bought a pair of new Avon road rider tyres and replaced the front and was going to replace the rear tyre when it was worn out ( the 1000 miles of life left ) This plan changed when i noticed a split in the rear tyre sidewall adjacent the tyre security bolt. Out with the tyre levers and once i got the tyre off it was evident that the idiot previous owner had got the tyre security bolt fitted incorrectly, one half of the tyre bolt was between the rim and the tyre!
I rode the bike home across the country when i bought it and had done a few hundred miles on it before finding this. It was not obvious when riding the bike that anything was amiss. Needless to say i think myself extremely lucky that I found this before it caused an accident.
I would urge everyone who has just bought a bike to check the tyre fitting very carefully even to the point of deflating the tyre and checking its seating on the rim, especially rims fitted with a security bolt.
ride safe
Peter

Yes, my tyres tread looked like new, didn't realise how easy it was to date them, the giveaway was splits in the sidewalls though.
