I want to sell one and keep the other for my ' 72 commando build.

They are slightly different and was wondering if anyone can identify ?

I like the black one better cause it just looks cleaner, with more rounded lines. It does not have the raised metal ridge on the front edge like the other one ( red stripes )

Also the black one seems to be just a hair smaller ??

The mounting points and petcock locations seem to be identical.

I'm betting that black one is fiberglass and is off a pre 71 bike.

Thanks for posting the photos - haven't figured out how to do that yet.

Both tanks are steel. I do think the grey one is off an earlier bike.

The grey steel tank with the ridge on the front seam is like on the 850 models, circa 73 or 74 at least.

Didn't the later 850 models get a slight change in tank like that ?
They look a bit cruder around the front - and underneath ?

Steel as both latches hinge at the rear to stop being sprayed by gas during an accident. But I like the crackly paint job on the rightside one so peel off the red tape and clearcoat it and good to go.

OK, I am going on what I was told by LAB. The grey one is from the period between fiberglass and Mk3. The one without the raised lip around the front is the Mk3 tank. For you project, use the one that seems to have the least rust. And in my humble opinion you should keep the other as a spare. If not, how much are you asking for it?

I didn't think they made steel tanks without that lip around the front. Shows you what I know.

The black one looks like an 850 Mk3. Since the hinge for the gas cap is at the rear, likely a metal tank.

The black one looks like one from one of my MKIII's, it's made from heavy guage sheet metal and is quite heavy, even withour fuel in it. If you're going to keep one and sell one i'd strip'em both just to make sure your not keeping a bondo baby. I know magnets might identify spots, but I'm just saying what i"d do. :)
