Turn signals

I use a Kisan Signal minder on my neg earth bonneville. It has customizeable shut off delays and has a feature to halt the countdown while the brake light is on, so keeps flashing while at long stop lights etc. Also allows setting turns to be solid on, lower brightness as side markers, turn off/fully on for indicating. I always run them in that mode for extra visibilty on urban roads.
I don't think it can work on positive earth setup, as told to me by a Kisan support tech. I also use their brake light flasher unit on bonneville. Tried another brand on the commando but couldn't get it to work with positive earth, no matter how I wired it. These semiconductor flashers are fussy which way the electrons flow.

Maylar,
Thanks for the reply but I am confused. The instructions say “Make sure you connect the mo.stop in the right polarity. An operation longer than 5 seconds will destroy the device”
All I am after is self-canceling turn signals and I have positive earth with LED bulbs.
Thanks,
Mike

The Mo.stop replaced the current flasher unit which has 2 terminals, trace the 2 wires back through the wiring on the wiring diagram. One will be connected to the battery -ve terminal, other to earth e.g. +ve. Once you know that connect the 2 Mo.stop wires accordingly.

Well - not quite @maylar, you're right about the positive wire, but the second wire goes to the turn signal switch.
That's for a negative-ground system - is your's like that @YING ? If you have a positive-ground bike then I would contact MotoGadget for advice - or someone else on this forum may have experience?
Cheers
Rob

Thanks Slick,
That really helps.

Two questions about this device (looking at the site suggests the SM-1 is probably the best pick?)
1. How do you connect the brake signal to achieve the pause in timing?
2. What are the two 4-pin ports either side of the dip-switches for?
I looked at their website and it doesn't clarify these questions - at least to me.
Cheers

It's still red to positive, black to negative. For positive earth, the red wire goes to the blinker switch (the lights are grounded, i.e. positive).

For the count down pause during brake light on, you just tap into the brake light switched wire.
I can't recall what the two connectors are for. I think there is an optional accessory connection port and perhaps one is for another model of the same device, for bikes with different brake circuitry.
If you get this for positive earth setup, please tell me if you get it to work. Mine is on my neg earth bonneville and Kisan support told me is will not work on positive earth. But maybe they just don't have knowledge of these old bikes.

Ok I found what those two extra ports are for, optional accessory left/right "VectraLight" connections, Kisan's license plate surround indicator/brake light setup.

If I do this it will be on negative earth.
What I meant about the pause is - how does the unit know the brakes are "on" when there doesn't appear to be any wired connection from the brake light?

If you look at the intruction guide for Signal Minder, there is a section starting on page 20 labelled "Step 2" which details how to hook up optional running lights (all four indicators act as running lights, switch off/on for turn signalling) and the option to tap into the brake switched line. This is all part of the "Options" connection multi-plug on side of the module opposite the dip switches your pic shows.

Sorry - don't have that document - haven't bought one (yet)

Edit: I have emailed Kisan and asked them to email me one for the SM-1

What is the advantage of the Kisan unit over the mo.stop from MotoGadget?

I have the Mo Stop, but reading from the manual the Kisan unit appears to have the advantages:
1. Doesn't "time out" waiting at traffic lights (with brake on).
2. Can use indicators as additional running lights (visibility)
3. Can use indicators as extra brake lights (visibility 2)
Not cheap so I'd be keen to hear if they're really that good. @Tornado , others?

Do these work with positive earth?

I've run the SignalMinder for 6+ yrs now on Bonneville. As I said previously, I set it up with all 4 turn lamps on full time as running lights. When indicating that side blinks off and on again. I've converted all bulbs to LED. The brake light signal pauses the turn flasher from auto shutting down until brake light is off. There is an option to flash all 4 turn lamps when braking for more visibility but I choose not to run that (a bit too disco for me!).
There is also a hazard flash mode, accessible by I think 3 or 4 on/off toggles of the indicator switch. Also a parade"wig-wag" by a similar toggle sequence.
If you run the turns as running lights, it does pass a low voltage through the indicator warning lamp, making it appear on constantly or as in my LED warning lamp, flickering rapidly.
This changes to a slower flicker when actually signaling a turn. You get used to it. If not using running light then no change from normal.
You can modify the turn signal switch to not latch on. Make it just a momentary switch. This way you do not have to physically switch it to off position. Forgetting to do that means signals will auto turn off, but switch is still in on position. So next time to turn you need to cycle to off then back on. The SignalMinder comes with instructions and some bits to modify most common bike switches to act as momentary type. I choose not to do the mod.

Only issue I had with it was getting it wet one day after a power wash sprayed it. Had to dry it, hit it with WD40 dispersant. I now have it enclosed in a plastic bag to avoid that again.

There is another type of flasher auto cancel on market last few years, using fancy accelerometers to determine when completing a turn. I think it was $200+ USD. Smart Turn System

Rob,
On your bike with the mo.stop,is it running with positive earth?
Thanks,Mike
