I couldn't work out why the standard British number plate fouled the indicators on my Roadster. Are they the wrong way round (front to back)? As I bought it it has long stalks at the front, & short at the back.

Yes I was just looking at it & I had one of those penny dropping seeing the light moments!

Not only were there "short" and "long" stalk/stem versions of Lucas signals,-originally, but there were four or five variations of mounting thread length to suit various applications, and the Lucas replica/pattern items available today, only seem to be available with two lengths of thread, so it's not always a simple matter of swapping the signals from front to rear.

my orig 72's have orig. 4" long stalks w/ a 5/8" capture nut at the signal side and the mount side.
Later stalks are 4" too but the signal housing at stalk is captured internally rather than tightening via an external 5/8" nut.
That's the two styles orig to bikes I've actually seen on orig units. Shorter 2" stalks look cool on the rear and can be found on Triumphs.
Hope this helps

Marshall,

Your's is a delux model! The '72 brochure says "flashing amber turn signals with sealed flasher in headlight shell avaialable as optional extra." Strange...the wiring for the flasher is close to the rectifier location, not in the headlight shell. Both of my '72s did not come with them. My red bike in the picture to the right had these added in '98 from some I found at swapmeets, $20 for the set. I have long stems front and back.
