So, I bought some aftermarket turn indicators. They have a 12V 23W bulb. Norton parts manual say a "382" bulb is required. Did a google search and didn't find much. I believe the resistance is off because I only get a steady light when touch the blinker stem to a ground, (fender) and no blink action. I suspect the other one is not working because the PO removed the blinkers in 1975 and the "Lucas type 8FL" flasher unit has not been tested since then. So, what now???

Thanks as always.

You may need two bulbs (front and rear) to get proper flasher operation with old style flasher relays, modern electronic flasher relays can work with one bulb.

A "382" is a standard 12V 21W bulb in the UK, and I certainly got plenty of results googling "382 bulb" http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid ... q=382+bulb

Make sure each blinker bulb holder has a good ground connection. Personally, I would replace any old 8FL unit with a modern electronic 2 pin flasher relay.

Always test your bulb in the holder before you bolt it on. I have been using the # 536 flasher when I can find them. They are good for up to 6 bulbs.

I'm sure there are solid-state flasher units out there that would replace the bi-metal strip type and would be independent of bulb current. They probably have warning beepers to tell you a bulb has died too.

My late but not lamented 1968 Rover 2000 had such a device (presumabnly made by the Prince of Darkness) , so they're not new tech!

Well there was a replacement flasher at Autozone. It was a #529 and it actually fit in the old bracket that the square Lucas one occupied. I got everything to work fine with the new flasher but the back indicator that hooks up to the green with red stripe wire is inop. I did some troubleshooting and verified it's the wire and not the indicator. I did have to rig up a ground for the rear signals as the painted bracket was not good enough.

Soooooo, I guess it's time to chase this pesky wire down and find the break. :(

A new harness will be in the works when I start the refurb on her. For now, "Nell" has new stick out ears and proper handlebars....

Saga continues....As always.
