trying to get the idle right on my '72 with amal 930's. the engine only responds to the right side carb. am i correct in thin king the synchronization is off? i can get him down to 800. the right side exh pipe is discolored a bit, plugs are a dark tan, occassional backfire or pop on the right side when revving from idle. tank is 2/3 full of av gas. bike runs super. i know i'm chasing my tail trying to get a steady idle w/ these old amals but am wondering why adjusting the left carb has no effect. thanx, rick

Are the carbs sleeved? I farted around with the Amals on my Commando for weeks trying to get them to idle properly when I first got the bike. Tried all the syncronization tips etc. to no avail. Never could get them to idle right and got a Mikuni!! One of the slides was worn more than the other and I assume this was what was causing my problems. Since that experinece, the first thing I do now with all my bike restorations using Amal carbs is to get the carbs sleeved. Then you can start tuning from a solid baseline knowing the carbs are not leaking air.

Here is a very straightforward way to sync Amal Concentric carburetors.
Check the play in the slides. If it is excessive then correct this first.

To synchronise I always use a pair of vacuum gauges that way any small differences in airflow can be dealt with by getting exactly the same readings on right and left cylinder

well i syned both carbs, pretty staightforward thanks to the link provided . right carb will idle down to 700-800 while left needs 1500. tommorrow i'll unclog the left pilot and see what that yields. neither slide seems sloppy, both quite close actually. this to my untrained norton senses.
