tti gearbox

I will go and have another look under the bottom of the box. I definitely remember re-locating the bottom bolt slightly further back. I don't think the case on the six speed would be different from the five speed.

Al, I’m not disputing that you may have re-located the bottom fixing,

My point is simply that your bike, and your gearbox plates, are not Commando. So its likely that whatever the reasons for you having to do that are pretty much unique to your bike. It therefore has no relevance to Commando owners.

So, I think it’s misleading of you to keep telling Commando owners that they’ll have to relocate the bottom fixing. A point backed up by every Commando owner that has fitted a TTI box (as far as I‘m aware).

I owe you an apology. The new bottom holes in my engine plates are 25mm further back and 5mm further down. But their location depends on the angle of the adjustment slot. If my slot was angled slightly up at the front, the box would probably have fitted without re-drilling the bottom holes. On my bike the outer gearbox case has ended up horizontal. It is probably angled slightly up at the front in a Commando.. The top bolt moves in a circle as the position of the box is changed to tighten the primary chain. If the angle on the slot is wrong, the top bolt tightens in the slot as the box rotates and you don't get enough adjustment.
The adjustment slot on the Commando is probably cut with a radius . Mine is straight.

Al, I had a discussion with a forum member today who suggested it was possible that your Seeley had originally been built using an AMC gearbox shell. Thus when you later tried to fit a Commando type, you would have to alter one or the other mounting points.

Isn't the Commando box the same as AMC ? I thought British motorcycle manufacturers never designed anything new when they could use an old design. If it was Japanese, I could understand it. With their bikes, each model can be designed from scratch They are not dog's breakfasts like Nortons.

Norton models like the P11 and N15 had a gear box shell designed to be fit in very close to the engine. There are also different locations of where the clutch cable enters the outer cover.
