TTI gearbox leaking behind sprocket.

I get a dribble out of my TTI gearbox after a ride. I do not put the bike up on a center stand, and my portable stand won't fit where I park the bike in its hidey hole in the garage. Side stand is on a block and the bike is almost straight up when parked. Oil is filled to midway up the kickstart shaft. My rear chain is not run tight ever and neither is my clutch belt.

Anyway, does anyone know the specs for the seal for the case behind the sprocket? Since TTI and the people that sell their gearboxes do not provide a damn bit of information about TTI gearboxes (to me anyway), I'm going to call it a sleeve gear or mainshaft seal. I sent a request to TTI asking about the seal, but I probably won't hear back for a month or possibly never. It's race season and they are probably busy.

Edit: Vaughan at TTI got back to me with the seal spec information I needed.

Since he has been in post Vaughan has always replied promptly to me.

When you mention race season, their is when Northern Hemisphere racing is off season, and lots of customers, like me, do gearbox refresh work out of season: I think they are always busy!

Bargain buy is their 250NZD refresh kit with all seals and bearings, though you are a better man than me if you can get the wire circlip out of the sleeve gear without modifying the gear!

Thanks for the kit part reference. I'm guessing that kit would cost more than a new AMC gearbox. lol

Now I'm slightly confused. You mean to tell me I can't just replace the seal from the outside once the sprocket is out of the way? The case has to be split and the guts pulled out to replace that seal. Steaming pile of merde if that is true.

I probably won't do it until winter rolls around, if I ever do get around to it. The leak isn't terrible, just harshing my fantasy of owning a Norton that didn't drool after a ride.

No, you can just replace the outer seal from outside. Though, I suspect it is easier to remove and less damage potential with the sleeve gear actually out.

The circlip I am referring to holds in the two needle bearings inside the sleeve gear.

I had my sleeve gear out to do other work, including replacing the two large bearings the sleeve gear runs in. This is why I say the refresh kit is a bargain, 7 bearings and a bunch of seals and some circlips.

Just looked at the 'exploded drawing' Vaughan sent me, but it doesn't show any of the parts inside the sleeve gear, just the gears and the shafts and all of the shim, bush and circlip parts.

I'm guessing you need the sleeve gear drawing for that! And a range of drawings for cases, outer and inner covers, with bearings shifters and stuff.

But in truth, because it is a cassette design it is a very easy gearbox to pull apart.
 
Thanks for the clarification.

I generally use a single wrap of electrical tape around any shafts a seal would have to travel over to get driven home. Oil the seal and lightly oil the tape. I then unwrap the tape once the seal is in. It pulls right out of the seal and I've never cut a seal doing that. Always a first time though.

I should have pulled the gearbox apart first time I tried to start my engine with it installed. It locks up hard on something inside there once in a while when kicking it over. Kind of unusual in my opinion, but nobody will ever say if they have experienced it. People including Vaughan tell me they will look into it, but I actually don't get anything other than "that's never happened before". Don't want to take it apart. I know I can do it, but there is no joy in my having to do it. I bought it from Andy, and he was in the "that's never happened before" camp as well unfortunately. Boo hoo can't get no respect. 🤣
