Ok. Got yesterday’s issues resolved. Tried to start bike today (1970 Norton Roadster). Getting gas, oil is fine. Only a pop from tailpipes. I’ve resigned myself to checking timing, spark and points again.
Anything else I should do...any advice?!
Thanks

If you are running points then the chance is your timing is out by 180 degrees.

Easy way to check is swap over your plug leads and if its out it will fire up, sometimes the wrong point is set for the wrong cylinder or firing order.

Have you gone through the carbs? See Bushman's Guide for Amals on the tech info thread of this forum.

Before we can starf guessing, Please tell us a paragraph about your skillset, past projects, etc. It helps us determine a starting point.
thanks

I’m a novice. I know the basics; I’ve rebuilt a Honda 350 and a 1973 Commando (very little engine work - lots of re wiring, re furbishing, etc. ). With this project I seem to be struggling with engine timing & two point sets (just starting to understand) , and the Amal carbs. Those are what I‘ll be looking at next. Thanks

Ok. I have not tried to get a bike running after installing new jugs, pistons, head, etc. Worked through issues with help from folks on this forum and got the bike put together but I am stumped- will pull carbs next. I’m comfortable with the basics but this project is a step or two beyond what I’ve attempted before. Not sure what else to add. I’ve pretty much been learning as I go.

I would think that if you have popping in the exhaust you must have spark and fuel which leaves the timing as the culprit?

Probably. I double checked fuel & spark - both good. I’ve been struggling with timing. I get left cylinder to 28 below tdc (black & yellow wire). Double check that advance unit correctly installed, points gapped. That’s as far as I get. Not sure if timing is correct. Will take primary case off and check timing marks. Will also remove carbs and re check them.
