Trump seems to be doing well so far...

The big problem in the last Presidential election, IMO, was that a lot of folk didn't want either of the candidates, so it was "vote for the one you dislike the least". I think there was also a definite feeling of "no woman shall be President". If Trump does get impeached, we may find that we like Pence even less when his true colors (religious fundamentalist nutcase) are evident.

If voting is not compulsory for all citizens in America, who actually elects the POTUS ? In the situation where voting is voluntary, the ratbag extremists are always sure to vote. Perhaps the only time you would ever get a true reflection of public sentiment in America, might be when there was extreme outrage ?

In Australia, we recently voted and legislated to give LGBTI people the right to marry each other. So now we have religious people fighting for 'religious freedom'. If Mike Pence is a religious nutter, should he have religious freedom if he becomes POTUS ?

We have the right to vote and the right not to vote. Gay marriage has been legal here since 2015, it is not a religious issue so religious people who have a problem with it don't have to get gay married. Separation of church and state should stop Pence from blatantly using his position to push religious agenda.

Pence is a spineless closeted gay man, his own self loathing will likely make him an ineffective leader anyway.

Trump lost the popular vote. If you want to understand American politics you must understand the flaws in our voting system.

I think many systems around the world are similar, here in the U.K. we have constituencies - similar to your electoral college. Our government is usually elected on about 40-50% of the vote (which is usually only about 65% of registered voters) but with a majority of “seats” in parliament, it is a symptom of multi party politics. We have 3 main parties, 4 in Scotland and Wales and the vote against the winner can easily be predicted to be larger but first past the post politics gives us the government.
Hence why many here do not vote - the government does not represent them.
John

you bunch first have to understand the US is NOT a democracy. that is why we have the electoral collage. it stops a few large population areas from controlling the rest of the country like the far left California and north east. cry all you want but trump played the system to his advantage to win the office. the best definition of a pure democracy is two foxes and a chicken deciding what is for lunch. i would not want to be the chicken. also the turn out was 2012 58% and 2016 was 58.9% you bunch need to stop crying and deal with it just as the right did with obummer.

you mean the majority of the country? right.

cry all you want but trump played the system to his advantage to win the office.

you mean lying to those desperate/gullible enough to believe his BS? Oh and Russia.

Birther movment? Obama the secret Muslim? Michelle is a man? What line are you drawing between "crying" and "dealing" with it.

Regardless of any of these points, the fact of the matter is, our current president is a laughing stock and likely traitor to the country. If you continue to back his blatant racism and ignore the facts, you are as guilty as he.

I did not know that, or much about UK politics. I tend to ignore most, but this year things have gotten out of hand.
I will say that from what I hear on the BBC your politicians are far more passionate and well spoken than the lot we've got here. Democrats are largely lethargic and spineless, our Republicans are just... something else...

But thats just from the BBC, Im sure you have your fair share of wet blankets too.

The right dealt with Obama just like Trump deals with reality: lies and denial. They'd rather have a despicable piece of shit as President than someone who's political views are diametrically opposed to theirs. Politics makes strange bedfellows, like the tight-ass homophobe Pence and the pornstar-fucking nazi Trump. If you voted for the two morons, you're a chicken that voted for the foxes. At least W gets to surrender his title of worst president ever.

In Australia, we have Tony Abbott and Pauline Hanson. If you did not know what you were going to get, you would be pretty stupid. Abbott still ended up as Prime Minister. He is the factor which is ensuring the Conservatives will get the flick in about 4 months' time. Most voters now know what he is and what he stands for - he has done so much damage.

it is this kind of hatred for trump that makes this an impossible conversation. so we now have a guilty till proven innocent system.some think obummer was the greatest thing since sliced bread but he was also on the wrong side and set race relations back 100 years with his coming out against law enforcement on numerous occasions. first was his beer summit because a cop was doing his job when he saw someone breaking in to a house and ferguson was another fine example with the hands up dont shoot lies along with travon martin, "if i had a son he would be like travon". he was a drug dealing thug and his mom sent him to his dad because she could not control him. yes it was 2 idiots met on that night but he was out looking to buy the stuff to make lean, look it up. i am done with you bunch with your blind hatred and out right nasty unproven remarks. this kind of crap is why nothing is getting done in DC!!!

Bill’s correct.

You guys should look in the mirror.

The Left’s foundation is envy, hiding behind a fig leaf of equality.

I don't see what Trayvon Martin has to do with anything, but ok.

i am done with you bunch with your blind hatred and out right nasty unproven remarks. this kind of crap is why nothing is getting done in DC!!!

Not because he shut down the government and half his staff has quit?

You guys may not be totally familiar with pre-president Trump, so let me say a few things having grown up in NY metro are. The man is a career con-man, notorious racist, admitted sexual predator with well documented links to the NYC Russian mafia, I know it sounds like conspiracy but it isn't, its all out in the open if you wish to read about it. If you don't think that disqualifies him from leading our country then maybe YOU need to look in a mirror, or at least into the face of your wife, mother, daughter.
He made empty promises to vulnerable, well meaning Americans. Fed them what they wanted to hear and left them with nothing. Ask yourself, am I blindly following this man because I believe in what he stands for or am I unwilling to admit Ive been conned.

Trump made a mark out of you and your inability to engage in an informed intelligent conversation about the topic says more than anything.

For the record I think that our mutual love of motorcycles trumps (sorry) the political leanings each of us may have. So please don't take these things personally.

The guy talking blind hatred refers to a former President as obummer. The hypocrisy runs deep.

No idea why Obama is relevant here at all. Last time I checked this thread was about Trump...

It would be nice if someone could coherently defend Trumps actions with a shred of intelligence but it seems all we can get is "but Obama!"

At the start of 2018 the thoughts from most commentators and political reporters were that he will get a second term - what is the thinking now?
Will the wall help him or hurt him?
John

The thinking now is that he won't make it through the year.
Democrats need to come up with someone capable of connecting to middle America.
Those who continue to support him are too far gone.

Unfortunately Pete, the disenfranchised and disengaged are still there and just like the U.K. - the ruling political class (for you, East coast/Washington centric for us South East/London centric) just don’t connect with the majority of regular people.
Whichever way you look at it and whatever you think of the legality of the process, Trump did connect with the blue collar ‘regular Joe”
John
