Hey guys, I'm lacing and truing my front wheel on my 71 Commando (front drum). I've laced the wheel and am hoping for some clarification as I believe I am overthinking it.

I understand that the rim must run center between the forks. But does the rim need to be center to hub? Or do I need to install the brake plate, spacers etc and center the rim to the whole assembly?

I have my wheel on a truing stand and with all the left spokes loose, and tightening only the right ones, I'm still finding abut a 1/4" difference between sides).

Thanks

Does anyone have a dust cover NM18551 on hand that they could measure the thickness. I'll need to make up a spacer until I can get my hands on one.

Thanks again.

The dust cover centre is 1/8" thick and that I recall the rim has no offset to the hub so on centre.

I posted some dimensions in this thread.

Basically, the hub flanges are equal distance to the outside of the dust cover and outside of the backing plate.

Perfect! Thank you so much. I’ll have to pull it apart and check if there’s something going on with the rim or spokes.

Even if the front rim is off-centre in the forks, when you align the rear wheel, the error is usually corrected.

It should be easy enough to bolt the hub and backing plate into the sliders (including the 1/8" for the dust cover) to check for centre as a measurement.
Those spokes at the hub do look odd in the pictures for both length and angle.

Ya the fact that it doesn’t want to naturally center is a bit of a tell that something is off. Perhaps I got the inner and outer spokes backwards.

Turns out I had the wrong lacing pattern. I ended up referencing a few large photos as I couldn’t find any directions.

For future reference if anyone is looking to lace their from drum. It is quite straight forward.

-the inner spokes on both sides of the flange run parallel to each other.

-Same goes for the outer spokes but in the opposite direction.

Cheers
Dan
