I'm considering replacing the exhaust system on my T140 with a high-level on the left TR6C system.

Trouble is, I don't know exactly what's involved (no parts book), and no-one seems to be stocking the exhaust pipes - anyone got any advice/pictures/expolded diagrams/part numbers?
The head has been converted to push-over stubs, so I don't see any reason I couldn't get the system to fit straight on (as much as is possible with a Brit, at least  )

Thanks in advance

I think those years' parts books are available on-line. Do a google search...

Andy,

Theres a couple of things to consider - the T140 top end dimensions are different to the 650's. The frame for the TR6 was also very different to the T140 OIF. Add this up and you'll find that the pipes will struggle to find a comfortable alignment. You've only got to be out a fraction at the head and the tail pipe will be way off line. Personally I'd get them bent up out of blanks to suit.

Another thing is the performance. The T140's had a narrower exhaust port diameter and header pipes to increase gas velocity. The exhaust cam was mild compared to the E3134 generation cams, hence the port size reduced. This was due to the more stringent noise abatement regs from the US market. Fitting the bigger bore 650 pipes means you will change the performance. I suggest there will be less bottom end and no improvement in the top end unless you make suitable carb mods. If the motor is apart, get the 1971 cams and followers from the T120 then all will be good.

Mick,

Definitely some food for thought there - I'm not sure if they did an early OIF with high level pipes, but I haven't done too much research yet

Incidentally, the head has been ported and fitted with 32mm carbs, and 650 style screw-in stubs.
I also stuck a Spitfire exhaust cam in there, so revving isn't a problem: The one on the right is a 3134 profile

I also junked the original flywheel and put a Thruxton one in out of a '68.

The current downside is it has some lovely-looking alloy barrels with Nikasil liners, but softy 7.5:1 pistons, and I'd be looking to find some 11:1s and iron barrels for ultimate poke, however I'm getting a bit old for that sort of thing (it's what I told myself before I fitted the new cam and flywheel!)

As it is it revs easily and is a lot smoother than originally, but feels a bit like it's being thrashed compared to the Commando

Hi Andy,

The only OIF fitted with any non-down pipe arrangement, if you can call it that was the ghastly Tiger Trail, a very limited number built in the late '70's. It was a black and yellow TR7 single carb, with the exhausts merged 2 into 1 around the base of the cylinders near the timing cover, then under and up to a horrendous slab of a muffler. The whole lot was matt black and rather ugly.

You've got the right stuff for the motor, so fitting 650 big bore pipes should be OK with a bit of carb tuning. The real obstacle remains in the height difference between the T120 and T140 top ends and the symettry of the 650 bolt up to the 750 OIF. Possibly, if you could approach a friendly UK Triumnph specialist like Hughie Hancox and see if he'd lend you a TR6 pair to see what can be done. I really think a few customised brackets will be needed but you'd end up with a lovely special if done carefully.

Wouldn't it be easier to take the bike to somebody who makes custom exhaust systems, and get them to bend up a set of pipes to fit it?

Certainly worth considering, although I'm guessing I'd still need to provide a pattern to get the right shape?
From what I can make out, all the brackets, shields and silencers are readily available - but the pipes seem elusive.
Talking to my friendly local Triples specialist, the pipes can be ordered from a 'usual' source, but the general form is they get returned because they don't fit!

i am fairly sure the high leval system was still available for 71 trophy's and featured in the 71 parts book which i have a copy of but i haven't had time to check yet. As this was oil in the frame differences may be minimal.

For what it's worth, I bought earlier 2-into-1 high pipes for my 1970 t100C from Armours of Bournemouth. They may be able to help, but I imagine you'll need to measure your OIF against a pre-1970 TR6C to see what will fit. The earlier pipes are much lighter.

Hello
I'm new to the forum , but was looking at the high pipes on a T140 discussion , I'm not sure of the dimensional differences between the 650 and 750 top end , but im sure ive seen oil in the frame 650s with the high pipes , although the later OIF trophies had the H link pipe just before the silencers and this caused the silencers to be further back on the bike and i think made the whole lot look a bit clumsy .
Ive got a set of 67 high pipes on mine , i got them on ebay in the UK , £55 , they seem to fit OK quality is what youd expect for the money . But the 67 pipes are slightly shorter and the silencers for that year go on without the H link pipe, so the top silencer sits slightly further fwd than the lower pipe, it follows the curve of the rear guard and looks tidier to the eye.
see if you can find a photo of a 67 tr6c on the NET, ( bearing in mind it will be a duplex frame not OIF) the silencer brackets run from a P clip on the frame rail down to the rear footrest mount , just Fab your own to get the pipes to sit as you like them.
cheers

I ran a set of original '68 "C" pipes on my '70 for years with home-made brackets, then finally got a better complete set of pipes with brackets.

The thing about the earlier muffs is, they burn you even easier than the later style.

there were Gold ones , too . K70 Tyres Shown arnt to bad . Were the standard Dirt Track ( Flat Track ) Tyre , pre the big Goodyear things .

Those pipes at the ton in the rain distribute boiled water on your left ankle , so need high boots . Melt Through nylon socks . O.K. though ,
the leg was just lobsterish rather than plasticised . :?

I put the siamesed pipe from Armour's on my '74 650. It fitted pretty well, has a nice sound that I feel is naturally quiet - I recon you could run a much less restrictive silencer without it being too loud. Just thought you'd be interested...

I've fitted a set of high level pipes and silencers to my TR7RV (actually started out as a standard T140V )
I converted to push over pipes, then asked Armours in the UK if they would send me the pipes/silencers for fitting , before they were chromed (they don't make st st in this version coz of the severe bends) anyway they did send the stuff to me (after allmost full price had been paid) I got the pipes fitted up, and welded a lug on the frame to take a bracket that both silencers attach to, much stronger and neater than the factory L type bracket. It all turned out quite neat as I'd thought about the whole build before starting. the bike has a 71 only large twin tank, Morris wheels , "classic" type side panels , alloy yokes, short seat and lots of other small mods.

I just noticed this thread has been resurrected - a couple of months after I bought new low-level pipes
Did you have to make any alterations to the pipes/silencers?

Pictures would be great, if possible.
There seems to be a parallel path going on here - I've has stubs fitted to the exhaust ports, and I got some fibreglass side panels too. Ironically, my T140 started out as a TR7... :)

Here it is in current 'been in the garage and not ridden for 3 years' trim.

Hi Andy,

I didn't have to alter the pipes/silencers at all, as I'd fitted them all up and got a silencer support bracket welded onto the frame (supports both silencers) before I painted the frame, you know what it's like, I had no intention of taking a good running bike apart, and three weeks later it's in bits ! To start with I was going to keep the twin carb splayed head, but the drive side carb filter would have fouled the pipes , so I ended up getting a TR7 head, and fitted a Mikuni single carb kit from Allens, which incidentally only just fits before touching the frame oil tube.
Will get my mate to post pics when I can, but you are welcome to see the bike if you want, I live on the Wirral.
