The rubber used these days is man made rather than from rubber trees I believe?
A mate of mine swears by soaking new rubber footrests in "waxoil" for a week or so
The stuff that you use car chassis to stop rust
I've never tried it and I don't know if it's true or why it should work?

I know that the old hard intake rubbers on my GL1000, came up good after soaking in isopropyl alcohol and oil of wintergreen.that was for softening, the triumph rubbers are quiet rough to look at and already soft . Do you think what we stick them on with could be a cause , most evaporates and drys or bonds it to the steel peg , I've seen proper industrial rubber parts last for decades. Would wax oil affect the gluing on ? .
