I have installed the Tri-Spark Classic Twin ignition on the Commando now, but in my usual semi disorganised way have managed to misplace the instructions, and after looking at the Trispark website cannot find the following information.

What is the degrees setting at full advance and at what revs?
Is it 28* as per original, or is the perceived ideal now 31* as Boyer recommends?

I have the sparx instructions andthey say to rev the engine to 5000rpm and set at 13 degrees for full advance.
The charging system must be able to supply 11-14 volt while under load. When using halogen lamps/electric starters and other high voltage equipment they recommend you use the Sparx 210 watt 3 phase charging kit ( you should also fit 5000ohm spark plug caps)

The Tri-Spark instructions don't mention 31 degrees, only that the timing: "....should be the fully advanced timing position for your engine. For example 28 Degrees BTDC."
Curiously, my instructions don't give an RPM figure to check it, so I set it so that it didn't exceed 28 deg. when revved up.

I wrote to Tri- Spark re this and asked 28 or to 31 degrees, Steve said 28 degrees is fine, but it may be found that a particular bike might run a wee bit better timed further back. I have gone for a static 29 time on my own and we'll see how it goes when it is running, a bit of trial and error. From what I can gather the Tri- Spark is fairly flexible when it comes to timing degrees, (within reason, obviously), giving good tickover. If I wasn't sure what to set it at , I would go for the base 28 and adjust it from there if I felt I needed to.

Thanks for that information.

So this begs the question (for me anyway);
Why did Boyer come up with 31*?
By setting the Trispark at 31*, does this possibly cause it to be over advanced at the lower end of the rev scale by 3*?

Anyway, going by what has been said, I'll go to 28*/29*. Interestingly, I had already provisionally set it at 31* as I couldn't find the information, and I have had two kickbacks when starting on the electric starter, so maybe it was overadvanced, but I am just coming to set the carbs up, so they may in part be the cause of that.

My directions said 28%. I'd worry about your starter system setting it further advanced than advised.

I took my (850 MkIII) Commando out for its first run today since I installed the Tri-Spark 'Classic Twin' ignition.
No kickbacks were experienced when using either the kickstarter or electric starter. That was with the Tri-Spark set to the standard 28 deg. BTDC. Although kickstarting with its previous Boyer Micro Mk3 ignition was always good (and I never did experience the kickbacks that some owners seem to do with Boyers!) it always required a full-blooded swing on the kickstart-especially when the engine was stone cold, but now all it takes is an easy swing on the lever (once the crank is set just over TDC) to get it going, hot or cold!

I've had no kickbacks yet either. I just purposely tried it with battery low, the sump full of oil , and with a half hearted kick. No kick back and I'm not limping. I know my Boyer would have bit me for that.

Just to update, since my anti-backfire device had been activated twice when I had provisionally set the timing to 31btdc with the Trispark, I have since re-timed to 28*btdc and set the carbs up, and all seems well with no more kickbacks.

Just an FYI but anyone in N. America looking to grab a Tri Spark should get ahold of CNW as they are now the N. American distributor and also a reseller. I just picked mine up from CNW and I'm also pretty excited seeing all the positive feedback on the Tri Spark so It seems I made a good decision (for once) in buying one.

Bye bye Boyer.

So far the Tri Spark is the best I've tried. I added carbs, coils, and the Tri Spark this winter. If I could only add one it would be the Tri Spark.
I haven't tried everything yet, just magneto, points, Boyer, and Tri Spark. The Tri Spark is the very clear winner among these for me. I kicked the Norton over last night in sneakers, I would not have done that with the Boyer.

Been there with the Boyer and sneakers and it hurt. I had trouble walking for the rest of the day after that one.

Coco,

It was one of those kickbacks that sold me on the Tri Spark after the limp. I wouldn't have this bike if not for the Boyer, it bit my brother too many times.
