Trans won't down shift sometimes

Out Riding today coming to a stop light the trans would not down shift finally got it to go back to 1st then it seemed to work fine any ideas? Bike is 72 Commando Interstate Combat 750
 
This isn't a syncromesh type of gearbox. Gradually down shifting as i come to the stop is sort of the norm for me.

A clutch in good working order make thing go very very well. Clean plates, proper stack height and a good clutch center will make shifting through the gears while standing still much easier.

may be dragging clutch or notched centre hub. but you shouldn't have bronze clutch plates in the 72??? When you goose her hard do you get any clutch slip?
