Who owns the rights to sell Norton branded clothing and items?
I keep seeing clothing on Instagram listed for sale by Norton Clothing.

I mentioned this to them and they insist Pepe owns the rights and trade mark to sell norton clothing?

what about Breitling / Bremont norton watches?

A lot of money for a watch that’s still available long after the company sunk. Maybe the watch prices should drop too. Say 75% drop lol.
 
I paid a lot for one of the first edition norton bremont watches. One of the 200 issued worldwide when norton launched the 961 se.

You just don’t see them for sale anymore and in the world of horology that genuinely means the value stays high.

Then in 2007 I bought the V4 example too although I’ve sold that.

Bremont are a fantastic watch company, they make brilliant products and i’m delighted to own it.

Rrp in 2009 was £3600 or so. I paid more than that. Norton will always be a thing my sons remember when they think of their childhoods, so one day they can have a watch to remind them.
 
Major sports (NFL, MLS, NBA, EPL ...) license the rights to multiple organizations concurrently to manufacture and market 'officially licensed apparel'. Generally, it's not the trademark that is in question or in play, it's the contracts that have been written for the licensing rights
 
Not an accountant here but my understanding is that with Norton in administration it is still, for the moment at least, a live company just under new management and as such should still be receiving revenue from whatever deals were struck for the licensing of the name.
If or when the company is liquidated that ownership will be one of the assets which will be up for sale.
 
Correct the company exists but the directors are sacked and the administrators are in their place, its still a legal entity and has assets including trademarks and income from licencing fees. So Pepe Jeans can still trade using the trademark under the current contract, except the TM value in terms of cache is lower and hence the 60% off sale.
 
Lucky Brand, California used to produce some nice old Norton logo tee shirst and apparel and still do of the old Triumph logo. Wondering what rights they have. They also sell new Triumph logo. Could be the owners just get a cut or have been paid flat fee for rights.
 
I suspect that the old Norton logo was unprotected for long enough that it is a free for all on that, presumably the reason SG and Co had the new logo developed - they could then hold the rights to that.

The Wiz Norton team got a very aggressive letter threatening legal action for using the Norton logo on their merchandising. They were gobsmacked as they thought they were doing Norton a favour keeping the name alive on race circuits.


 
  1. Pepe Jeans London Ltd have the tie in to sell and market branded “official” Norton Motorcycles gear.

    Despite the London tag in their title, they are based in Barcelona and owned by a Lebanese businessman.

    I’ve bought from them before and after the Donington Hall companies went into admin.

    So it’s safe to buy from them.

    Except for sizing as they do returns but NOT exchanges.

    So their XXL for t shirts and sweatshirts equates to a 46” chest but in leather jackets fun’s to a 42 or 44” chest which is annoying..

    They despatch by DHL and it’s professional.

    It’s usual for them to hold sales incentives but this time, they’ve not brought out a new Spring season like they should’ve.

    Added to that, I’ve noted they’ve added stock such as the Liam jacket which hasn’t been on the main website for a year or more so I conclude Pepe Jeans are clearing all the Norton stock and not bringing out new lines.

    I know that KJ and SG used to go out to Barcelona to discuss bizz with them so must’ve been on a commission.

    But the company, Pepe Jeans London Ltd, is registered in London and is NOT connected by ownership or directors to Norton.

    That said, Pepe Jeans lost millions in the last company reports I saw at the end of 2018/ early 2019 which saw them close the London Norton store and a few others and shrink the expensive Regent Street Pepe Jeans flagship store too.

    They’ve caught a cold like most of fashion retail. Bigger numbers than anything Norton have the administrators looking at and Pepe are still trading. Mr Leb must’ve deep pockets.

    I never bought SG’s reason that the Beak Street Norton store closed cos the rent went up. I believe Pepe ran it too and rationalised after huge losses of their own.

    But the tee shirts and sweatshirts are good quality and better than anything Norton have sold under their own steam like the race team merchandise.

    The jackets are just fashion items and way worse than a Dainese or Similar. IMO
 
Personally I think the Pepe t shirts and sweat shirts are great quality, and so long as you buy when they’re on one of the frequent sales, they aren’t too expensive.

But the issue I have is their sizing, an L in one product line can be too big whilst an XL in another is too small, it’s very inconsistent between the different products.

Hate to be one of those ‘told you so types’ but I recall saying on here before, I visited the London shop, is was cool... for a Norton fan. But when I was there, the shop was not very busy at all and not many of those few were buying. I just couldn’t see how they could possibly sell enough t shirts to make a shop like that viable. The shop was laid out like an expensive designer brand shop. But it’s motorbike merchandise FFS. I think they got the value and popularity of the brand completely wrong.

It does look like they might be ramping down, so get ‘em while you can I say!

Agreed. I like the Norton "Sidevalve" jumpers, cotton/10% cashmere for £30. Free postage including returns, so order a couple of sizes and send back what doesn't fit.

Technically the old logo was protected, just not very well. But you are correct about the reason behind the new logo. Same with Triumph, the Bloor Triumphs have a different logo for the same reason.

I just got some more last week, and the t shirts are mostly good stretch fabric, which helps with comfort and odd sizing.
