The last time I was into the primary on my MK3 was 2013, about 7,000 mi ago. Thought it about time to change the oil and clean the bronze plates. What I found is what at first looked like a jellied mass of crap at the bottom and bits of the same everywhere. "What the hell?" What it actually turned out to be was,  , the ground up remnants of a paper towel or two. Probably used it to minimize drip-age the last time I serviced the primary I more than likely left it tucked under the alternator. Remember this is a MK3, sprag, back-fire device, auto- tensioner too,,, and not a murmur in four years. This is the equivalent of a surgeon leaving a sponge in a person. I have a 1997 Triumph Speed Triple. If I had done the equivalent of this to that bike, I'd have had a smoking wreck in ten minutes. She's a tough ol' bird!

Maybe a paper towel in the primary was just what it needed !

Bit like putting banana skins in the diff, to quieten it down (4 wheelers of ye olde days). ?
Thicken up the oil a bit....

Or, maybe not.

Good work ! I'm going to put some kitchen sponges into my MK111 primary. Should quieten things down (clackings) on start-up and absorb more oil to lubricate all those bits. :)

Dang, that sounds like a fantastic secret tuning tip for long engine life!

Thanx.

We need to know the brand paper towel and just how many are required, we don't want to overfill.

Then there will be endless paper towel threads consigned to the circular file with the tire and oil threads.

TOO TRUE!

Do you presoak the paper towels in oil before you throw them in the primary, or do you put them in dry? :)

Dry of course, and they must be properly installed, not just "thrown in". They must be rolled nicely so they tuck right up under the stator. Don't know how many, can't seem to find the amount needed in "capacities". I do know they were not of the cheap variety. I'm kind of surprised the "mush" was so easily identified. There was none in the clutch but a pretty good wad got into the well feeding the hydraulic tensioner. I got that out by taking off the plunger plate nuts, loosening it enough to wash it with CRC Brakleen then blowing it out with air.
