Torquing the Headbolts

I was need to torque the headbolts on my 961.

I have a copy of Richard's manual which shows how to do it but refers to the Service Manual for torque settings.

I understand there are several versions of the manual. I have a copy of the Scribd manual which I downloaded from the internet, but I understand there is a more current version.

I also have a print manual that I ordered from Norton. It doesn't have a date on it but it has these distinguishing characteristics:

1. Thick glossy paper;
2 . No pagination, but it is divided into 20 sections marked with black triangles at the bottom corner of the page;
3. The diagrams and photos are in black and white rather than colour pics in the scribed version.

Are there more than these two versions on the manual and how can I tell which is the latest one?

Hello Roofus , You can tell several ways . Lets cover two here. First if the 20 sections are divided with a thick black bordered edge which extends beyond the rest of the pages and second look at the valve adjustment section. If you see the adjustment of the valve rockers saying 2.25 turns in from just touching then you have the NEW version . Either way , the torque specs and the tightening sequence should be the same in the old version. Stop using the scribd version because it is outdated for sure. Just in case here are the torque specs : three small bolts in front to 30Nm , and four large dome nuts and two large central bolts to 60Nm. Please read the manual as the large are tightened in two stages along with showing the pattern sequence . First to 30Nm and then final to 60 Nm .

I think I have an older version because under "Valve Clearance Adjustment" Section 4.8.2 . . . .

my manual says: "One full turn clockwise from zero on adjuster"

It would be a lot easier if they put dates or version numbers on the manual though!

I need to get an updated version. I see from this post that several of my head bolts were under torqued! My version showed 25 Nm instead of 30 Nm. :roll:
 
The old manual torque specs for the head are also outdated ! The old manual states only 45Nm on the large bolts . The NEW manual clearly states 60Nm . So be careful using the old outdated manual , things have changed.
 
Sorry for not including in my manuals but I didnt want to get sued for copywrite infringement. My manuals are all how I do things. Nothing from the norton info.

I have Richard's Bulletins on Removing the Tank and Torquing the Headbolts. I have Tony's specs on the torque settings to use.

I have poured over the Norton Manual several times looking for torquing patterns and I have come up dry. Can someone give me some advice please on where the torquing patterns is located in the manual?

First 1 to 6 , then follow up 7 to 12 (repeat 1 to 6 in other words) . Then finish the front 13 to 15 . Use the latest torque specs and read the procedure .

Wow - this is invaluable information. Almost makes me want to dive in and re-torque everything all over! A decent manual is worth it's weight in gold. :wink:

Well I got the headbolts all torqued successfully.

It took about 3 hours from start to finish, but I could probably do it in about 2 hours now that I have done it once. Most of the work was removing hardware to make the bolts accessible.

I had about 2000 miles on the bike, but the bolts were pretty snug and only the four outside ones need just a slight tightening.
