For future use.
As far as a good flat surface goes, you can go to your local Home Depot or the like and buy a piece of 12x12 granite tile and use that as a flat surface.
They are 3/8' thick though. I use a piece of a cut-out of a slab of granite from a countertop as a flat surface. Those are 3/4" thick.
Those you can find at any granite countertop store where they make the tops as they just throw them in the trash.
Lay some emery cloth down and in a circular motion sand away.
